How do you get the shifter cable end off at the transmission end. I already have the replacement part, but its not obvious how to disconnect it, its impossible to see down in there.

Thanks, I did see those links but

how is the plastic piece supposed to come off. Is there a clip or a special tool required. I tried to pull it off, but it did not loosen or feel like it would come off without breaking it. There just is not much room to get two hands in there at the same time. Some of the pictures and descriptions were helpful. I may just replace the rubber grommet if I can't get the piece off.
Thanks again.

If you are lucky, it will release after pushing the orange button. If you are not lucky (like me) the cable end and the black plastic piece that stays on the end of the cable will not separate due to heat over time and the two parts slightly warping so they cannot slip apart.

If that is the case, you may have two options. One is to swap the bushing only (a hard push to get the new one out of the new end and into the old end), or cutting the old one off. If you cut the old one off, you may still need to trim the black mating plastic to get the new end to slide on.

Also, if you only swap the bushing, you don't have to fool around with the cable adjustment.

All of this is detailed in those links posted.

bushing. When I pushed the button in the plastic piece would not come off. It was loose but it was getting stuck when I tried to pull it off. I reset the button and got it locked back into place.

I used some WD40 to lubricate the new rubber bushing and it pushed in pretty easy. I practiced on how to get the thing pushed through the hole on the new one and went under the car and in 5 minutes it was in. Shifter is back to normal, nice and tight with very little play.

Thanks again.

For future reference, if the spring retainer breaks (like mine did) so that you cannot keep the orange button locked in, all you have to do is this: Get a pair of pliers. Twist the cable around so you can get to the connector from the back. Grab it with the pliers and squeeze. The connector will split in two, allowing you to pull it off. You might have to pick some of the innards out, but it will come off relatively easily.
