RPM at 70mph

My '95 3L MTX with Zetec final drive is only a little better than the stock #'s. I also have 18" wheels with a 35 series tire which also fluctuates the actual numbers.

70mph = 2750-2800 rpm
75mph = 3000 rpm

As someone else posted, you are somewhat limited. There are two final drive ratios, the 4.06 on the V6 (including SVT) and 3.82 (I think, might be 3.84) for the 4 cylinder. They are somewhat interchangeable, with the taller gears often being used with a 3 liter swap. I say somewhat, because I understand there are some limitations between the various years. Terry Haines is the expert on this topic. You may want to contact him. He is a former Ford engineer and was involved with the Mondeo launch. Today he owns a motorsprts shop in Michigan. He doesn't post here, but if you search around you can find his contact information.

I get about 3100 at 70 with 215 60 15's but I dont know if the spedo lies

Yeah, it does seem to rev on the high side at cruise, but its a cammer motor, meant to wind. Plus, the semi-lofty revs keep you in the heart of the powerband.

My 1989 Supercharged Cougar would loaf along at about 2,000 RPM at 80. Of course, that thing made 315 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 RPM, so if you put your foot to the wood, even in fifth gear, the car was gone. :cool:
