Re98 Center consoles

Ok gents, I went looking for some consoles and no real luck, all the blue ones I found were in pices, and I found a total of 0 manual boots. How hard is it to come up with a manual boot? Think ford would still carry a 95-97 shift boot?
 
FWIW, pre 98 Contour and Mystique shift boots are different. If you get a pre 98 Contour console, make sure you grab a Contour boot.

Any older "boxy" Escort. Not the bubbley ones with the round radio, but the ones before that. I just poped it out with a screw driver, peeled the vinyl ford emblem from the little tin backing/mounting plate, and glued 'er in to the 'Tour.
 
yes you just have to get the right shifter bezel. i had one, but cut it up because i just got my manual boot. heres a pic of mine, i have since gotten the right shifter boot and bezel for it.

Interesting thread. I'm fed up with the flimsy little cupholders in the wifey's '95 Contour, since replaced with a single large version which is sturdier but doesn't work any better. I had been considering replacing the console with a 98+ so she could have some decent cupholders, but after going through this thread I have to admit that the early console does look better.
So what are you guys using for cup holders? Or don't you drink and drive? (not an option for my wife. she needs her water intake)
 
no drinking while in my car ... well on long trips I have a water bottle and I just make sure that the cap is secure and I lean it against the passanger seat against the center console ...
 
I drink in my car every single day. Cupholders are important to me. They need to be functional and large enough to hold a big cup.

I'd die without cupholders.

AMEN! You could always go old school and get a cup holder that hangs off the window ledge...LMAO
 
when you close the center console lid on my 97, it wont stay locked down, because the little clip retention thingie in the console itself is broken
 
Yeah i just ordered mine 2 days ago.Man i can't wait for it to come in!!!

I def think they look way better than my 98+. The cup holder situation was the only thing that kept me from buying this console sooner. I just use my nalgein(don't know right spelling) bottle in my car when i drive. Therefore i never worry about spilling anything. Thats when i realised i should buy that pre98console.

Man i hope it comes in looking good!!

Next week i pick up my pre98 trunklid with lip spoiler!! Yeah buddy

You ordered one?? From Teamfordparts or whatever? How much did that run you? Did you get to pick what color, etc.
 
The only reason I like the post98 console better is because of the cup holders, and by that I mean the "updated" cup holder insert. I don't like the pre98 cup holders, but for those who don't use them much I guess it doesn't matter.

I use my cup holders a lot, but I prefer to have more space for gauges and a better arm rest then to have quality cup holders. Which is why I went to the pre98 console.

No i went to car-parts.com

Put in the year make model, part selection i choose interior.

It then asked for interchangable years. so i put 95-97.

Then it gave me a list of a bunch of interiors.on theleft side it tells you if its a dash or console. I just looked atconsole and what color it came in. Collected all the colors and places that had them. Then spent the afternoon calling all those places.

I found one with the tan interior like mycar. bezel shift boot and all for shipped for cheap to if i add.

Try that, car-parts.com conencts to all the junkyards online directory. SO it makes thing easier.

Anybody tried a 99 or 2000 Cougar center console. Very similar to pre-98 Contour, but has a real cup holder

Example of cup holder in Cougar:

I seem to remember someone saying the Cougar console won't line up properly with the Contour dash. I think that the console swoops up too high and might not fit in the available space between the bottom of the dash and the floor. Anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
