Radio Troubleshooting

I have a 95 Contour GL with the factory Premium Sound System that has the separate factory amp. My problem is that the radio will operate properly once every blue moon but only lasts for several minutes. Usually only the display will show when the power button is pushed.If the volume button is pushed sometimes there is a dit-dit-dit sound. Need some advice as to the easy way to troubleshoot the system. (Will replace radio and bypass amp if required.But first I want to make sure that the ground or antenna or something else is not the problem.)

Ya def. check your wires. Factory amps seem to be a problem with these cars and get corrosion on them easily. Your stock stereo also could had have a internal malfunction due to moisture. I had that on my stock stereo when i took it out. But ya def. check those wires
