First I do the small things from top, airbox, battery, battery tray, wiring connections (undo one at the besides the brake booster the other connection is under the powersteering fluid reservoir, the reservoir comes out by pulling it up) Take the wipers and the wipercowls off, this will give you some more clearence you want without breaking them off when you are pulling the engine out.
Once I do these I move to the bottom, I take out the bottom front and bottom rear roll resistors off, take the y-pipe and cat off, take the shift cable connection at the transmission off. Take the bottom mounts off completely you want to have all the room to pull the engine out. Keep the top 2 mounts on for the time being as they will support the weight of the engine.
Then drain engine oil and tranny oil.
While they drain take the tie rods off the spindles and pop the spindle off from the ball joints on each side.
Pop out the axle from the tranny on the drivers side, undo the nut on the spindle and put it aside, for the passenger side pop the axle out from the intermediate shaft and take the nut off the spindle and put it aside.
Taking the drivers side axle is much harder than the passenger side. Pry by working around the axle, I pry at one spot turn it a little pry more turn pry etc etc. It helps taking them off.
Then you can move onto draining the coolant, there is about 8 Liters in there so make sure you have a big enough container.
The rad can stay in along with the fan shroud while you are pulling the engine out.
The drain plug for the rad is on the bottom passenger side corner of the rad you are going to need a screwdriver with a big flat head to remove it.
Once you drain the coolant you will notice the rad hose right by the drain plug, the easiest way to remove this is by removing the radiator support braket which is connected to the subframe on the passenger side. Take that off and you can easly access that hose.
Then start taking off the big coolant hoses on top of the tranny, keep your container under the car over there since you are still going to have coolant coming out.
Undo your fuel rail with the disconnect tool. And take off the 2 powersteering lines going into the p/s pump. Make sure you keep a container under the car since the p/s fluid is messy. Remove the hydraulic line going to the throwout bearing/slave cylinder on tranny and move it out of the way.
I am probably missign a few things but at the end you should have the engine supported in there just by the top 2 mounts, put a jack under the engine and just support from the oilpan with a block of wood. Take the top 2 mounts off.
I usually place my chain using the studs which are revealed after you pull the mounts on the tranny and engin. I slide a link of the chain onto the stud and put a nut on it. Just make sure you have a chain that is suitable for the weight.
When you are pulling the engine out make sure you are lifting from a point where the engine won't tip front/back or side to side. You want to pull the engine right up since its pretty tight in there.
