I figured this would be easy to find out, but can't find it anywhere; not in the Ford manual, not here, not even in the Haynes manual. All I can find is "fill to MAX line". I'm totally draining the system, how much fluid do I need? Even approximate in quarts is fine, I'd just like some general idea.

Mine was totally empty and I used just over 1 QT to get it to the max line after burping the bubbles out of the system.

I recently changed the fluid in two of my cars by draining the fluid at the power steering cooler. I took alittle less then a quart to fill. However that wasn't a drain of the whole system. but you could do that a second time after running it and that should flush it out pretty well.

The engine and tranny are both coming out. Would this totally drain the system?

actually it could end with nothing being drained out. depends if greg wants to move the pump off to the side like we do with the duratecs. otherwise it will get most but not all of it I would say. you will have some left in the rack at the least. grab 2 quarts and if you don't need the second one you can just return it .... actually the spec for 99 is dextron/mercron atx fluid so you should have plenty on hand anyway.

Well, I'm having him change out the PS pump too while the engine is out, since it's much easier. I just wanted to get a feel for how much ATX fluid I needed to bring him... I have 12 quarts, so that should be enough. Dry tranny takes 9 quarts.
