Hey guys I'm doing a port match 3L and I started porting my heads. I'm using an air die grinder and I think it's a carbide tip (not completely sure) made for grinding aluminum. It's supposed to not gum up as much but just a little in to the porting process and it is pretty much not working at all due to it being covered in aluminum. My question is what a I dong wrong? I'm grinding in differnt spots constantly so it doen't melt on to the tip and I can't find a way to get the gummed up aluminum off. Any recommendations or info about the tools you guys are using would be great. Thanks ~Brian

P.S. If anybody says I didn't search I did find a link to ebay on Blu's 3L build for eggplant but the product is no longer available.

Um, here ya go:

(hold please, searching)

This is what I did with a tiny ball shaped carbide bur bit. It was horribly slow and way too small for taking out as much metal as I needed to.:

Then I got this sweet set of bits from a friend of mine to borrow. Needless to say, having the right tools makes a world of difference.
I hogged out this 1/2 of the port in 2 minutes to show you guys some progress. I took it down to about 95% so all I have to do is polish/finish the ports smooth. I would grind for about 30 sec, dip it in motorcycle gear/motor oil, let some drip onto the area I was porting and grind away.

This is super easy. Get some good lighting and take your time sweeping the bit so you don't dig in. Any damage you think you might have done most likely can be fixed. If it starts to jump around on you hold onto the die grinder a little tighter and don't push so hard

2 minutes of grinding with this one bit:

You can see the tiny bit I started porting with laying in the case:

P.S. Bugzuki, I love you for making these plates. I would say these are a must for beginner porters....

PS, I have ported 3 motors already with this bit and it still seems to work as well as it did on the first motor...... I also use a cone shaped sanding/polishing stone after the porting is done just to even things out just a little more. Looks like the first bit on the left but is a stone.

Are you using anything as a lubricant? If you port 'dry' it will be much more likely to 'gum up' with aluminum.

I've had good experience using ATF as a lubricant, cheap, on-hand. I'm sure there are better substances.

I dipped the whole tip so as to cool it in the process of adding lube. I doubt one is better than the other...dipping might lead to less ATF being flung around, but not sure.

I've also used WD but it seemed to burn up.

FYI those pictured above aren't even the correct type of bits. You need non-ferrous bits which will not get packed full of aluminum. Keeping the bits oiled is going to help quite a bit as well.
