I know what the code P1131 is, and some possible causes for triggering this code, but was wondering if anybody had some help narrowing it down for me.

I have a 98.5 Ford Contour SE 2.5L. It's has a standard transmission with 98k miles. I have had the car for about 10k miles and the Check Engine Light has pretty much always been on since I have had it, and apparently most of the car's life.

My normal route to work takes me down an Interstate where I drive 75+ mph. But for a month I took a different way into work and for the final two weeks the CEL went off. The alternate route I took only had me going to about 55mph. When my route changed back onto the interestate, the light went back on almost the exact same time I hit 70mph.

The possible reason for the code are:
-Misfire on bank 1
-Vacuum leak affecting bank 1 only
-Fuel injector problem bank 1
-Engine mechanical condition

I also have a rattling/vibration coming from the driver side engine compartment. I have no other information than that - I know that is probably useless.

On a final issue, sometimes the car is funky shifting into 1st gear. If I take it out and put it in two or three times in a row, it'll go in just fine, but sometimes that first time or two is just funky. If there is a problem with my clutch could this cause the noise above?

Any advice on these matters would be a great help. I haven't had the car very long and it has already cost me way to much (alternator, rack & pinion streering, brakes - although not Ford's fault) and can't afford to fix much more...

chances are you need a new O2 sensor. if you want to confirm swap the O2 sensor and if you get a P1151 then you know it is the O2 sensor and you can replace it

on the vibration/noise, check the suspension and the waterpump belt and tensioner.

as for the first gear issue, if not already done I would suggest changing the mtc fluid, use Ford "Honey" or Syncromax. If you like you could also bleed the clutch but it could be a syncro issue ...

Which sensor?

Which sensor?

OK, I am looking at O2 sensors on rockauto.com and there are a few to choose from. Is there a difference between the front and back, upstream and downstream sensors? I am looking for the cheapest possible part.

My car is the 1998 Ford Contour SE 2.5l V6.

Front (Bank 2) and Back (Bank 1) are the same. Upstream (sensor 1) and Downstream (sensor 2) are different.

So this is the one I would need?

ACDELCO Part # 2131317 {#88929744}
SENSOR,HTD OXY(POSN 3) POST CONVERTER-FRONT-4 WIRE
SENSOR,HTD OXY(POSN 3) POST CONVERTER-REAR-4 WIRE

Any better prices than RockAuto.com?
