So, I've seen that many of you guys run more oil than what they say you should put in, like, another quart of oil or so or whatever it was. Why is it that you run more oil than the "normal" levels?

Not sure how why they didnt catch it, although they may have been running with 6 quarts to begin with during testing. Some people run 6 and others run 6.5 quarts. I'm gonna have to do some math when I install my remote oil filter but I have a feeling it will still be right at 6 quarts.

Pretty sure this came from the racing conditions (Roush, Bounderant, pace cars, etc.) where some cars had failures.
I use about 6.25 in mine from what I've read.
Pretty cheap insurance to me.
I'd add an extra 1/4- 1/2 quart if you go with a relocation kit.

Did SVT, like, over look this or what happened with it when producing and testing the car?

Also, how much more DO you guys run with?

SVT spent a great deal of effort trying to reproduce the failure mode, ie, spent days and days on a track intentionally trying to induce engine damage or failure. Ultimately, they were unable to recreate it on an otherwise well maintained CSVT.

Thats with the 5.5 quart recommendation?

maybe they weren't turning right??

i always ran 6qts, until the ok came down from roush racing? (i think) that it was safe to run 6.5qts. never ever had a problem...and was never afraid of high rpm right hand turns.

and even though the cars now dead, the motor is still good...:blackeye:

quick question...

I bought this car and only drove it for 300 miles before doing a bunch of work on it. Part of that work was relocating my oil filter. So I never had a chance to do an oil change with the stock setup and see where 6-6.5qts was at on the dip stick.

I would like to know where on the dip stick the oil level is when running 6-6.5 quarts of oil on a stock setup. Is it above the full line? If so, about how far above?

Right now I'm running a FL-1A filter, -10an hoses/fittings and 7qts of oil and my level is right at or just a touch below the full line if I recall correctly.

Keep in mind that part of the original problem was slow oil drainback from the heads, which was at least improved on the later 3L's w/ the extra oil drainback holes. I run ~6L in my 04' 3L swap.

I'll let you know since I'll be doing a relocation and will want to know as well afterwards.

Yes.

I'm still not convinced there wasn't something else contributing to the failures seen on the street. The stock rod bearings are not forgiving at all, and if there was a sand contamination issue, or who knows what else, it could look like oil starvation. I do know the testing done by SVT to identify the problem was brutal, and was way beyond what would be considered abuse on a car, and they could not reproduce the failure mode.

The Bondurant failures never surprised me though, as those cars were driven very hard, I should know, I helped with a little bit of it too, lol.

I'm right there with you on this one, and I lean toward poor maintenance. I'm amazed at how many people will avoid changing their oil for as long as possible. Oil companies advertising oils that "don't need changed for 10k miles" makes it even worse.

So in your mind and SVTs mind, 6 quarts and clean oil are more than enough to keep the engine happy?

It should, as long as there isn't any other unseen issues.

Also, don't even consider using the now recommended 5W20, never never never. Use 5W30 at a minimum, and in hotter weather 10W30 up to a 10W40 would be good too.

On a regular dino oil I'm right there with you. Even the newest SM oils shouldnt be run past 5000 miles considering how cheap they are.

Well that makes me feel better about putting in the 10w40 hybrid mixture I have leftover from my old car. Its about 4 quarts 10w40 MaxLife, 1 quart QS 5w20 synthetic and some autorx thrown in for good measure. I was planning on then adding another full quart of Formula Shell 5w30 to add to the confusion and get it to 6+ quarts.
