Oil filter leak at the mount

Was changing my oil and noticed that there is a small trickle of oil coming from where the oil filter is mounted. From the last oil change, I noticed the same thing, so I made sure this time the filter was hand tightened as tight as I could get it. This did not make a difference. Can the oil filter mount be replaced? If so, is it easy to do?

check to make sure that the rubber ring (seal) on the mating surface of the oil filter did not remain when you removed your original so that you are "double stacked" on seals now.

"hand tight" is a really vague term. You'll want a little more than hand tight, but not much more, for sure.

Do you own a Ford CD manual, or the like?

Yes, you should remove this oil filter. Clean the mating surface on the engine with a paper towel or clean cloth. Then oil it and the oil filter gasket before reinstalling. I suggest you take out the lower radiator deflector (8 screws) to do this as it will help you see what you are doing and give you more room to maneuver. Make sure you reinstall it after the oil/filter change. I hand tighten the filter while wearing rubber gloves as it gives me more grip and eliminates the accidental burning of my hands. . Do not use a socket wrench or box wrench to tighten the oil filter. The generic instructions on the filter box says until it touches, then another 1/8 (????) turn. :shrug: Whenever I follow the instructions on the box, it leaks.

Ive had the same problem with my car as well. Small little drip of off the filter. I just tightened it and it went away. FWIW I felt it was a little too tight, but it didnt leak and came off fine at the next oil change.

Yes, double stacking seals is very bad! It can cause the oil to leak out so fast when you start it up, that the engine can blow before you even notice it... Experience talking... :bah:
