I use only Mobil 1 5W-30 6 QTs each time. I go about 5000 miles between changes.

If I can hear / feel the difference in the car after an oil change, am I waiting too long?

If you can hear/feel the difference, it is all in your mind..

Actually I just changed my oil this past thursday And I have noticed a slight difference in engine noise, especially at startup. I had ran Mobil 5000 in the car, and it was in for about 8 months and 4000 miles. And after going to Carlisle and back it was due to be changed (i.e. Dark brown oil).

I did not notrice a performance increase or anything of the sort, but the oil was past its life.

Now if I ran the 5000 to 5000 miles and then say put a another 200 on, I'm sure I would notice more of a difference cause the oil would be crap by then.

You can easily go 5,000 miles on conventional oil today. The performance of today's oils is very nearly what synthetic oil was 20 years ago. Both conventional and synthetic oils have improved, but the gap in performance has narrowed.

You are going 5,000 miles on synthetic and you are worried that you are leaving it in too long? You are changing it more often than needed. I believe in aggressive maintenance so I really don't have a problem with frequent oil changes, but you certainly are not going too far. I'm actually considering going to synthetic oil and performing annual changes. Currently that would be 10,000 to 12,000 miles.

I can hear a slight change in engine pitch when the oil is getting low. When I notice it and check the oil it is just above the min line. I top it off with a quart and away we go. I do my changes every 6k or so with RP synthetic.

Milage and amount of time between oil changes is pretty much all relative to driving style and enviromental conditions. Although I do agree that most sync should be good for 5k, I personally would never go over 6 months or 4k between oil changes.
