im unsure of the emissions testing to pass NYS inspection. is there an actual sniffer? or do they just monitor your o2 readings through a scanner? i have no cats on my car and want to be certain before i bring it in. if theres a sniffer, i'll have to take the main cat from the black svt and temporarily put it on the silver one.
 
either way I would put a main cat on the car, you don't want to fail a visual inspection if there is one.
 
as far as i know there is no sniffer test.. they just scan your car and they are suppose to do a visual check on your car.... but they place i go to they check the lights and scan it.... but i know the guy:rolleyes::laugh: but if i were u i would put the main cat back on in case they look over ur car..
 
for obd2 cars (97+) they now just hook up their machine to your computer and verify there's no CEL's or impending CEL's.

now, they are supposed to do a visual inspection on the car. I can't say i've ever had someone put my car on a lift and check the exhaust...but they might just do it so beware of that.

I had one place in CT just use a mirror and look under the car. might not have seen it happen if I wasn't watching.
 
yeah. i highly doubt that they'd want to spend all that time trying to lift my lowered car. thanks for the input though! i think i'm going to give it a shot anyways. i realllly dont want to cut out my exhaust and weld flanges on. plus, i forgot that i have a 3" exhaust, so i wouldnt be able to use the cat from my black svt
 
hey, inspection places are a dime a dozen...so if you fail just go to another one. sucks to lose the $37 bucks though.

fwiw, i think you'll be fine.
 
I passed last year with MSDS headers on the car FWIW... There is no sniffer in NY so as long as you don't have a CEL you're all set...

I think you'll be fine as well...

yeah but how many places would know off hand that there should be pre-cats built into the exhaust manifolds.

but then again I passed with msds headers and the turbo kit installed, but I got the emissions test done at a Kia dealer :laugh:
 
not sure if I'am to late in this thread but being an inspector, maybe I can :help: cats must be present if it had them oem, however if they are empty :shrug: does not really say in the book :rolleyes: depending on location in New York most place's only scan 96 and newer for check engine lights and or codes

its not that my cats are gutted, i have headers, y-pipe, and 3" pipes back. just resonators and stock mufflers

theres two of them in-line. hopefully they think i have two cats and have the most environmentally friendly car in buffalo! :laugh:

side note: if i have the airbag light on(mustang) is that an instant failure?
