Now that we’ve had this new format here for a while…

So, what methods do you use to overcome editing limitations of this “vBulletin” CEG forum? I for one really miss the simple tools the old format had for editing posts (adding pictures, links, simple formatting and such).

I don’t understand why the new “vBulletin” CEG dropped all that. I’ve done enough HTML programming that it’s frankly not a real limitation to me, but it does add to the needed effort.

My favorite method for overcoming the limitations here on CEG is to log on to some other forum I frequent, create a new thread using their editing tools and preview functions and then cut and paste it, with all the html codes, into the CEG “Post New Thread” editor (cancelling the other thread). Maybe not quite fair - but I am a contributing ($) member over there.

So, how do you guys overcome the limitations of our editing tools here?

Sounds like you still have Basic Editor.

User CP->Edit Options->Miscellaneous Options->Message Editor Interface->Standard Editor.

New members get Standard Editor automatically but old members copied over to the new forums defaulted to Basic for some reason.

Oh my gosh. That simple.

I just type what I need in the bb code to be honest, quicker than using the silly interface. (except for fonts and a few other things i guess, but i don't really use those)

I used to do that all the time with UBB. VB has different code though and I never bothered to learn it. I've also slowed down the use of smilies since some of the typing formats have changed.

I still can't post links properly with Firefox (link entry is broken) and can't edit my signature. Have to switch to IE to do that.

M4, avatars will never be a part of CEG. This has been discussed time and time again.

OMFG! thank you for pointing that out! lol I've been annoyed with the basic edit option since we switched over.

well, i've used vb a lot more than ubb (never really used it at all, actually) so I've picked up all the code. At one point I actually had to do some relatively complex formatting for news posts (different forum), and from experience all the automated editors do is clutter everything up.

as for urls, any http://asdf.com will format itself accordingly, if needed, [url.] and [/url.] is certainly quicker than chainging browsers, lol. and [.url=http://adsf.com]asdf[/url.] works for hyperlinks. html'ish, just with url instead of href.

Avatars would be a really bad idea with the way the layout is set up anyway. anything over 50x50 or so and half the page would be taken up by avatars. (since name + etc. is above the message, it would stretch that section, taking up otherwise useful space.)

I meant posting a link like this.

I have a theme on Firefox and I think that is affecting the text boxes. I actually forgot I have the theme since it's very subtle. I could always type the "url" code but I always try to do it in UBBThreads format, heh.
(Using Safari right now.)

Please no avatars! One of the reasons I like this site so much, other than for the amazing info and such is the fact that there is NO avatars and NO pics in sigs. Take a look at taurusclub.

Now I do have to say things look a tad better over there since they changed the format ( haven't been there in a while because it was very difficult to find info and because I kept getting virused!) but with all those pics and such, it makes it a headache to read posts without having to sift through all the crap!

I'll agree with the no avatar rule. I'd really prefer if all of the user info was on the left side, so that post height could be cut down, like on these forums. They allow pictures in signatures, but they have to be 200x50 or less and there are no avatars. That way if someone posts a single line reply, it takes up a minimal amount of space.
