Ok so as spring creeps up on us the mod bug is back. I want to get a turbo for the car and I wanted to know if anyone has run the npg non intercooled kit. I know guys have talked about maybe getting it and wanted to know if anyone actually committed to it?

It says that kit is upgradable but is it worth it to buy and then upgrade or do just go with the stage one kit right away? The price difference is substancial so would it be more cost effective to go the first route? Besides the differencial is there any other things that would need to be replaced right away, if you go with non intercooled kit would you need to do a clutch replacement?

Thanks for any help any one can give me and I know there have been a few list of what you need for a turbo but there isn't much on the non intercooled kit. Hopefully a good tax return will get this underway sooner than later.

I dont think you need a Stage 3+ right now, unless you plan on going 3L-Turbo down the road.

I have the Stage 1 NPG kit with a Stage 2 clutch and stock Diff, and I have never had any problems with the clutch slipping.

how is the driveability? the stag 3+ i svery stock like in how it drives and it will handle the power easily. no need to have to go back in for another clutch if you don't have to.

as for the flywheel I went SVT. some say that a light weight flywheel isn't good for a turbo setup, I mean its going to rev up fast enough already as it is. I am happy with it.

It drives just like a stock SVT/Stage 1 Clutch. The very first time I drove it, it took me about 10 minutes to get a feel for it, then after that I cant tell a difference on how it drives or engages or anything.

I have driven all of the different clutch setups for these cars (atleast all the main/good ones). Stock SVT, Stage 1, Stage2, and Stage 3.

If the OP has plans for a 3L-Turbo sometime in the near future (next year or so), then I would recommend a Stage 3. If not, then just go with a Stage 2. There is no need to hassle with a Stage 3 if your car is only going to be making about 250ish WHP.

Stage 2's have had lots of issues so stay away from them. Stick with the stage 1 until about 250whp. I ran a stock SVT clutch up until 300whp where it refused to hold any more.

At this point I have no plans on 3L unless the 2.5 craps out. I doubt at this point I would make much more than 250hp or less if I go with the non intercooled kit.

Bhigg besides the clutch does your car have any other mods? What kind of HP does it put down?
Thanks Justin

I have an intercooled NPG stage 1 kit on my car. I have the stock 2.5 with a newer LUK (stock) clutch and stock diff. My car has about 107k on the clock. I have put about 2k on the kit install. I run about 9# with the 8# wastegate. I have a manual boost controller and have run 10-11(300 whp). I have had no issues with slippage at all. Now, granted I know very well that the diff. is the weakest link. I have never dumped the clutch as I'm very certain the 0 to 275 ish hp will explode things. The non-intercooled kit goes between 3.5 and 5#. I have driven mine and shifted at these levels. It would definately make your car a blast to drive. I can tell you that I got my kit for around 2 grand...but after many trips to parts store/tuning headaches/injector issues etc I have closer to $4,000 in my install. To view the headaches search for my turbo install/trouble posts! As long as you understand the limits of the stock pieces, you can plant 275-300 whp with stock trans and diff. There are several 2.5 guys on here doing it everyday. I enjoy my new found hp from a roll ;)

Thats what I was looking for thanks man I'll have to check out those threads. You got a great price for that thing (well originally) hopefully someone else will decide to part with one and maybe I can snap it up. Thanks again Justin

I wouldnt mind having a non intercooled kit. IDK stage one would be nice too, but I am starting to think that I dont really need to add much more power to my car. I think I would be happy at just the NPG base kit honestly. Would kinda suck though cause when I had my heads ported the guy was doing it with NA in mind, I would need some new heads for a good porting job for FI

Ahhhh I wish I could afford it  I spent quite a bit on cars already this year and even bought another car even with my wife telling me no, so maybe next year.

No you won't. Good flowing heads are good flowing heads.

even the non intercooled kit will make you love your car so much more! and really, it could be driven reliably!

i drove my 3L turbo yesterday for the first time in months .... is all that comes to mind. the all seasons I have on the car would just not grip at high rpm. mind you I turned the boost controller all the way down so it was only 3 psi, was hitting 4 or 5 because of the cold weather and the car just ripped. time to put the 8 psi spring back in as a base

Besides the clutch and the Turbo Kit (injectors, plugs, etc), my car is completely stock. Stock Differential, Stock Tranny, brakes, wheels, stock headers, stock exhaust, etc.

The guy I bought the car from told me it put down 260-ish WHP & 240-ish TQ @ 7.5 PSI.

The car pulls hard after 3500 rpms, all the way to 6700+ rpms.

IDK the guy who did the porting on my heads asked me several times if I was gonna stay NA after I mentioned that I was thinking about going turbo. He said he would want to do it a lot different for a turbo. Dont get me wrong, I know the heads would work, just I could do better... and it would kinda suck thinking back and seeing how I put the money in, and now I am not getting the best I could have. Anyways, not something I can think about affording for now anyways, I really got to many other projects to do. I am gonna make some kind of progress with those lights before I even think about buying anything else right now.

yeah I know it would be fine, just a little annoying. like I said though its nothing to important right now anyways. The way my budget works it would probably be spring of next year before I could go in for a big purchase like that, and thats only if I am lucky. Between school, a new baby coming, and everything else, I have a feeling my budget is gonna see a big reduction soon.
