So this morning I went to my car, only to discover I had left my dome light on. No big deal, my roomie works with me and I carpooled with him. After work we jumped it, and I let it run. Since we aren't in the nicest neighborhood, I locked the doors and took my remote key with me.

15 minutes later I found out that the remote doesn't work when the car is running and I was locked out with the car running. Is there anyway to bypass this feature??! I know it's unlikely, but I figured if anyone knew it'd be someone here. I considered letting the gas run out so the engine was off, but since the key would be in the on position wouldn't I still not be able to get in?

I'd hate to get a locksmith out here without considering my options...

.... I'd swear the remote works when the engine is running... but if yours isnt, you have limited options.

If you do not want to call a locksmith, you can attempt to wedge the door outward slightly from the top corner and fish a coat hanger in to push the locks or the power window switches.

Failing that, you will need a locksmith.

Good luck.

It doesn't :(

I probably should have known this since I've tried it going down the highway, but it really wasn't a defining moment in my life so I didn't file it away in the old memory banks.

There are several members in minneapolis. If you cannot get your doors open the way I described, there might be someone near enough to you that you could get them to come out and help you for a beer or something.

Would anyone be willing to try putting their key in the "on" position, then checking if their remote works?

The idea here is letting my gas run out (~1/4 tank) and then since the engine will be off, but the battery will be full, I could then use my remote?

Ha thanks, I think I'll bite the bullet... It's been a bad week for the car. I replaced my bearing and lower ball joint, took me 2 hours longer than I thought it would, then discovered that I needed new brakes and tires.Doing that next week... Hopefully this is the end of money spent on the SVT for awhile...

wow, any other ford I have owned with keyless entry worked with the ignition on I'd swear.

I know my 97 sable did, because I would leave it running when I went into the grocery store when it was 35 below when I lived in grand forks. I checked and my 91 explorer does.

What a strange quirk....

I dont know of many cars that do allow the key fob to work will the ignition is on. Tried it with a few chevys and a few mitsubishis and none of them ever worked. Luckily I tried first to lock the car with it so i wasnt locked out.

It's true, the remote doesn't work at all when it's on. It doesn't make any sense at all. I find that when I'm in the car it is extremely difficult to reach the trunk handle, so that's how I found out that it won't work. It's a pain in the ass having to do extra stuff when you're dropping someone off that has stuff in the trunk.

some Fords might be different. IIRC the new Mustang the trunk release from the remote will work, but I'm not positive. IIRC there is no trunk relase inside the cabin so you have to use the key or remote.

Our keyless entry will not work with the ignition on. I have confirmed with my turbo timer that I can not lock the doors by remote until a few seconds after the time shuts the ignition off.
