That may be true, but if you consider inflation, a lot of today's cars can be comparable.

Car of $21K with est. ~2% annual inflation (conservative given our economy) between 1995-2008 will cost ~26700 today. This comes pretty close to the price of my "fully-loaded" Legacy and is even more than a comparably loaded Mazda6s.
Rough guesstimates but can give perspective as to what is out there in comparison to 13 years ago. Today's cars have many more features too, particularly in the way of safety, so you're actually getting a pretty good deal taking that into consideration too.
