I recently purchased a 96 6cyl mtx mystique, with 128k miles from the orignal owner.
The car is in great condition and runs really cool on these hot days.
First, Ive noticed a long thin line of oil on my driveway when I back up with the car, it doesnt seem to happen when going foward or stopping, just in reverse.

Second the oil is really black which means its not engine oil because I have already changed it and it is clear, cant be brake fluid because the fluid isnt that dark. I looked in my owners manual for a clutch master cylinder but it mentions nothing about a resivor, so is this a hydralic clutch and does it use tranny fluid in the tranny?

The oil has a hint of gas smell to it, very slightly though, I can clearly see the oil on the rear motor mount, its dripping off the bottom and seems to be on only the lower drivers side of it.

Can someone help me out to what this can be? I looked everywhere and cant seem to find where it is coming from, nothing seems to be really moist, just the mid shaft seems to be very slightly moist around the seal, but it looks like it isnt it because theres no way for it to get onto the motor mount.
I wiped off the motor mount and it just came right back again when I backed up, what could be or what is the problem

todras: I am assuming that this is a fairly big and expensive job
How is the power steering fluid?

Its good and not nearly the same shade of color, I mean this oil/fluid in NON-TRANSPARENT black, opaque. It looks like a a line similar to someones a/c drip off, long and thin.

I will look for the plug when I get home from work and stick my finger in to see the condition and level.

Anyone have anyother guesses as to what this can be?

Depends on the ability of the person. Just pop out the axle, get a big screw driver and pry the old seal out and then pound in the new one with a rubber or plastic mallet. Can also rent a kit at Autozone. Has 3 prongs that expand that grab the edges of the seal. It attaches to a slide hammer and give it a good yank.

Just pulling out the axle? I was thinking you would have to remove the transmisson...
I have pulled off heads and valves before, just dont know much about tranny's.
Today the car wasnt leaking anything, im going to try searching for the fill and drain plug to see the level and the condition of the fluid.

LOL! Not for axle seals! See the FAQ for fluid changing info.

I thought you said the input shaft  .

Anyway well its not the trans fluid because its full and looks like new w/ slight red tint to it.
I tried the powder trick, drove down the road and came back (about 1 mile) and here are the results.
This is the rear motor/trans mount, looking at it from the drivers side.
