An apostrophe is used to replace any characters removed when abbreviating a word. Cannot=can't, the apostrophe replaces the "no" that was removed. In the case of abbreviating years, you're most often losing the first two digits, so the apostrophe goes in front of the second two: 1997='97. Also Barracuda='Cuda, if you're intent on using an apostrophe.
