Moosing?? It sounds like an airhorn!

I have a 2000 Ford Contour SE V6. When I start my car in the winter (yes, only when it's cold outside) it makes an obnoxious noise, sounds almost like a foghorn. The engine revs up and down and sometimes it stalls out. Now this is only in the winter, summer and other seasons it doesn't do it. I've been researching this for a while and found out it's called moosing? Someone suggested replacing the idle air control motor mounted on the side of my intake? Someone also recommended a cold air intake??

What do I do? :shrug: My mechanic has never heard of it, but will look into it. I'm just trying to get a few opinions.

Look up the throttle hang fix on the old forums or the faq/mods section on the main page. It is reported to fix the moosing problem as well. I have had the moose a couple of mornings this year for the first time, but I find just a quick blip of the throttle takes care of it. Sounds pretty severe if it affects your engine idle.

Not surprized the mechanic hasn't heard of it.. though I've heard it on my neighbors Lincoln Navigator before. He said his mechanic had no idea what was causing it :laugh:
 
I was just told by someone on another forum that the idle air control motor next to my intake is the problem. I started my car and when it was making the "moosing" noise I tapped the iac motor and it stopped. I am going to replace it to see if it works. Its a cheap part and I can do the repair.

I was told to do the throttle hang, but also heard it doesnt work as well as the iac motor, the noise should go away

I remember a certain Supercharged SVT that had issues and I told him to do the THF but he said no...ended up doing it and it worked...go figure
