Moon roof troubles

Although I recall this is a fairly normal occurrence, all my moonroofs have been good until now.

Here's the problem I'm experiencing: the switch function which raises/tilts the moonroof at the back works fine. However, when I try to operate it to have the moonroof drop down and slide rearward into the cavity located in the roofliner, it just doesn't move. I thought it might be frozen but it's warm here, well above freezing. I know the most common problems are the motor seizing up or broken teeth in the drive.

Anyone have this or a similiar experience? How'd you fix it?

i have the same problem, ive just been too lazy to really dig into it yet. if you dont have it figured out by this weekend i might dig into mine and see whats going on with it.

mine too

mine too

I just took it apart today, turns out the plastic cover was broke and the gear would come out and jam it up. you really just gotta check it out to know. I am wondering does one out of a cougar work?

so since i had some extra time tonight i went and looked at my moon roof. while i was pulling everything apart i noticed that it looked like someone had already taken it apart and replaced the gear. i opened it up to look and the gear was perfect, so its not the gear. i put it all back together and play with it. it still goes up to the vent position perfectly fine however when i try to open it it trys but just lacks the "oomf" to do so. i suspect the motor itself is weak and just doesnt have the power to pull the glass back anymore.

Yes, I've taken them apart including the following: removing & adjusting the motor assembly because the mechanic who replaced the motor didn't adjust it correctly so that when it was supposed to be closed, it was open a crack-there's a detente in the gear mechanism and the motor must be in the proper position when it's installed; I've removed the glass portion to replace the seal. To do that job, everything must be removed and I didn't want to do it in the middle of winter. Everything is brittle and the chance of breaking something is much better than in the middle of summer.

Anyhow, keep me posted - for those who are also investigating the problem.

i noticed that there is a little metal "clip" rivited to teh plastice "slide" on the passenger side that has to go up and over a hump. it sits at the bottom of the hump when the glass is in the closed position. it seems that the motor just doesnt have enough power to push that little clip up and over the hump any more.

then its probably ur motor. go to a junkyard n pick up another one from a 97 n up tour. open up the motor and see if the gear's still good. if not, transfer urs to the one u picked up.

yeah m planning on it this weekend if i get a chance.

Thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully, that's all it is. I can't understand how it works in the tilt function but not the slide. It just seems to be frozen and seeing as how it's winter time here...

ok i looked at mine again last night. that "hump" that i was talking about has a small notch in the top of it. thats where the tab should be when the glass is closed. you can take a flashlight and barely see it with the glass down. if you get the glass to go that position, go outside and make sure the glass is aligned to the top of the roof. if its not then raise the glass to the vent position. remove the 3 screws from the front plastic piece and slide it back out of the way. the glass is held in by 3 torx screws on either side. loosen them, push up on the glass and retighten them. do this for both sides. use the motor and slide the glass back to the closed position. the tab should be in the little slot on the "hump". now align the gear in the motor. follow these instructions for the alignment process.

after doing this and playing with the alignment of the glass and the motor my moon roof now works perfectly.
