Before the lambasting begins, yes a search was done first. My question is simple. Do the MIL eliminators for Mustang applications (BBK for example) plug directly into the Contour harness, or is it necessary to get new connectors? I have the 0420 code showing and do not want to replace the pre-cat assembly. Thanks.

Yep. I used a set intended for our last '98 CSVT on my '01 Cobra.

My question about MIL's is that do you have to have an o2 sensor plugged into it for it not to throw a CEL? I have those and only one bung on my y pipe and I want to use that for my wideband....thoughts?

I ordered some Plug-in Mustang MIL Eliminators (96-04 GT) from American Muscle and they were not wired correctly for a Contour. The resister and capacitor were on the heater wires, so code P0161 appeared.

Fortunately, I was able to remove the pins from all of the connectors and reinsert them in the correct order.

Blue and Red also needed swapping. The Blue wire has the resister which goes to the Gray wire on the 02 sensor and Red has the capacitor positive connection for the Black wire on the 02 sensor.

Every time I see something about MILs I wonder why people stopped doing the anti-fouler trick that worked without an added harness.

I agree installing the anti-fouler adapters are much cheaper.

However this also means breaking loose 9yr old O2 sensors... which for me usually ends up a busted knuckle or bruised body part. ;)

But a 9yr O2 sensor is probably due to be replaced anyway. Remember the MIL Eliminators won't stop a bad O2 sensor code, only the P0420 & P0430 cat sniffer codes.

I was not familar with the anti-fouler trick so searched this site and nothing came up explaining how to do it. So my question is has anyone done this anti-fouler trick on their Contour and what success rate.

Also when you go for state inspection no visual inspection is required for cats or O2 sensors? Either of these methods would be easily detected by looking under car (MIL Elimin's not so easy to see if you hid it farther back in wiring harness)
.
FYI, I did a Google search and this was best DIY post I found.

Never done it on a Contour but I've helped people do it on numerous Mustangs and Mazdas. Basically what you do is find a spark plug anti-fouler thats the thread of your o2 sensor and then drill out the interior sparkplug hole so your o2 sensor fits in instead. This moves the tip out of the exhaust stream enough that all of a sudden its getting a normal reading and wont kick the CEL on.

Not sure about visual inspections but I know down here they dont put your car up on the lift or anything to check out the bottom. If you're doing emissions they would just plug into your OBDII port.

you must having working lower O2 sensors for the mil eliminators to work. the eliminators only prevent the pre-cat codes.

I think he meant more like can he leave them hanging there and have them act fine or would he need something like an o2 simulator.

If my O2 sensors were bad, I suspect I'd get a code for that. Plus these sensors and a few more have to be tested and shown to be good, before the catalyst monitor can be run.

The resister in the MIL eliminator attenuates the signal to trick the PCM into thinking it's an efficient catalyst. The attached .PDF file has a picture on page 17.

The anti-fouler moves the O2 out of the exhaust path, which should also reduce the reading. Search ebay for CEL eliminator and you see a bunch of them.

Here is a good article with more information
