Low Coolant indicator

Recently the Low Coolant Indicator has been coming on when my 98 SVT is initially started after setting for a few hours or overnight. It seems to stay on for about 2 minutes or slighly longer while driving and then goes off. From what I can see the level in the coolant tank is at or slightly above the "Full" line. There are no heating issues and the gauge reads normally. What could be causing this. Is there a level sensor in the coolant tank?
Thanks in advance

could be a dirty sensor

maybe. but the sensor is sensitive. need to fill a good amount above max line. the fact that it turns off after a few minutes means that the coolant is expanding as it heats and the level in the tank increases and shuts the lights off.

So funny that I came on here to post about this exact issue, and see someone already did. Then I see two fog light mod threads! Do Contours all develop similar problems at the same time??

i've had the coolant light on for a minute, im positive there is no leaks and the level is good. there are alot of sensors that are tay and malfunction easily on the car. if i had time to drain the system id replace it but its whatevr.

I recently pulled the overflow tank out and cleaned all the sludge from the tank and from around the sensor.

It works right, now.

came across this thread and was wondering what causes the sludge in the tank? Is it normal? I am seeing the same thing in my car and it has a small coolant leak. The light turns on too just like the OP stated, I top off the tank and the light goes off but the sludgy tank is bothering me. I was thinking the hoses might be shot.

if your coolant is the slightest bit low the light will come on. as engine warms up the coolant will rise/expand and the light will go away. this is normal, just add a little coolant and the prob will go away. do not jump it out like smalls said, this is a good sensor to have.

yeah I just want to figure out what that sludgy buildup is, my other car never had it and it had almost twice as many miles. I thought maybe it is coming from the hoses and I need to replace them.

There is also another reason for the light to come on. I found that if you add just water the light won't go off, but if you add antifreeze (50/50) it does. It must be able to read the resistance difference between water and anti-freeze.

it was a joke. the only reason why i had to jumper my sensor is because of the weapon r coolant tank that i had in there. i now have the stock tank back in there with a new coolant level sensor.
