Looking at 8" Subs for rear deck install, need help please

Well I just got done cutting the holes for the speakers. I used a right and left curve tin snips (red and green handles). Make a 7-1/4" diameter cutout from tag board for the Tang Bands. Trace the circle under the rear deck where you want the speakers. The best way to do this is to lay on your back in the trunk with your head facing the front of the car. Get a pillow or something to prop your head up with while cutting. Make sure you move wires that are in the way so you don't accidently snip those and don't cut too much material out. You can always cut out more if it is too tight.

If anyone cares, the Tang Bands fit right in from the top between the glas and the deck. They look nice in there.... I will begin the mounting/wiring tonight. The plan is to be able to see the speakers after the install and because the rear deck carpet in my car is dirty, I will re-cover it in some type of black material.

With that big ass magnet they're a pretty tight fit aren't they. I mounted mine from the top, got some nice grills from the exclusive company here in Oshkosh for like $8 a pair. Good luck on the install .

I used a right angle phillips screwdriver to hold the bolts from the top and used my impact drill to tighten the nuts from the bottom. When centering the speakers do not measure off the rectangular cutout between them in the rear deck. The rectangle favors the drivers side by about 1/2"+. Needless to say, my passenger speaker is about 1/2" closer to the center of the car than the other side, woops. It isn't that noticable unless you tell people and point it out.

The black fabric is an outdoor grade material that is resistant to fading and sun damage. The wiring and amp aren't finished yet, but I just rigged it for listening pleasure for now.

Overall, easy and cheap upgrade to do. I was hoping for a little more chest thumping bass but knew that running a free air setup is hit or miss. It has its good points and bad. I would rate it a 7 of 10 for sound quality and a 10 of 10 for the look. The sound is crisp and definetly performs better than the one 12" I had in a box and in the trunk with the seats up. I used longer bolts because I will be making custom covers for the speakers and I will need them to go through the covers.

I think the rattling is an easy fix. It is mostly small trim pieces that need a piece of sticky foam behind them. I didn't use dynamat either, it might have helped some but no one has it locally so I had to do without. The rear deck is strong enough for this application and doesn't wiggle around like you might think it would. Any who, pics :

sorry :) I think it looks pretty awesome...I would also like to see how you will clean it up underneath the deck since you used longer bolts...I was surprised with your level of detail, you didn't spray matching paint where you cut the holes...;) I plan to post some pictures of what I've been up to as well...I mounted the Sirius/Pioneer satellite radio hardware where the old factory amp used to be behind the glove box and have mounted two Kicker amps to the back of the rear seats so that the seats can still be folded down if need be...I have a different idea regarding mouting the subwoofer and will post pictures once I get it started...

The only reason I didn't leave them under the rear deck carpet is because that would be the worst piece for rattle and what better way to hold it down than with 16 screws and the weight of the speakers :D.

Level of detail ;), yah - I didn't paint the under side of the deck because there will be a box there eventually. I think it is the only way to get this setup to bump like I want it to.

I will dynamat the bottom of the deck, build some type of enclosure, foam tape rattling pieces and make speaker grills. I am glad it is a clean setup, not a thumping as I would have liked but sounds good.

With only a 8" surface and an open air set up, it won't have a huge bass response. I think I mentioned something like that in one of my previous posts...but it still does add to the fullness of the sound. I am actually thinking about upgrading the one in mine to a 10....only thing I am worried about is how much that would rattle the rear deck. For what you paid for those speakers though, and the little amounts of work needed, it is a worth while upgrade while still keeping your trunk empty.

Yes, for the $ - can't beat having my trunk back. ;)

If it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, I saved the pictures the day you uploaded them.

Ohhh yeah, I just got done cutting some custom speaker grills ...... anyone else want some ??? no pics yet :D

I'm gonna have to come up there and see that in person, then try to figure it out, realize I don't have the skill or the tools to do it, and then ask you how much for you to do the same for my car

Seriously though, that looks nice.
