I'm curious as to what your opinion is on lightweight flywheels. I know a few of you guys have them and i what to know a few things.

Does it effect the quality of idle to the point that its annoying?
Is it still streetable?
Did you notice a difference in gas mileage?
Difference in power? how much?
Are they worth the price?
Is there such thing as too light?

I didn't notice any difference in the idle unless the A/C is on, it's only mildly annoying.
It's very streetable.

It is a noticable increase in power over the entire powerband, but it does take a few more RPMs for the motor to get out of the hole.
TOTALLY WORTH THE PRICE! as long as you already have the tranny out of the car. :)
I have the Fidanza which IIRC is 8.5 or 9 lbs, I don't think you can go much lighter and still have a durable flywheel.
If you do the flywheel I would recommend getting a DMD to go along with it. It's incredible how much smoother the motor is with both installed. Assuming you have the tranny out already it's hard to beat $400 for the vast improvement these parts make.

If you are interested .. you may still get a good price via the details in the Fidanza GB thread.

I got a nice ego boost last week. A guy working on my car, who owns a nice 911, was intrigued to know what i'd done to my car saying 'it rev's really nicely' .... G.

i should clear this up. I'm not looking for the Mystique, i'm getting ideas on what you guys think of them because i want to put one in my Tempo. The flywheels from the 2.3 Mustangs and 1.9 Escorts fit the Tempo, so i can get a 9lb, 10.5lb, 15lb, 21lb or stock 23.5lb.

Oh OK.

With these flywheels, I only really noticed any improvement in acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear. I guess you can't expect one mod to transform your car .. unless it's a turbo !! ...G.

Thats good info. I'm looking into every little thing for the car. I've got a cam, i have lighter valves, different valve springs, different ratio rocker arms, bored .030" over, i'm porting the head and combustion chamber is getting ground out, i'm well, obvously looking into flywheels, and every other little detail. I'm hoping with everything it'll really improve its performance. Also lookin at an Eaton M62 S/C for it.

I have a lightweight flywheel in my CSVT and it's pretty nice once you get it going. Rev matching is much easier and smoother. It does get a little annoying starting out from a red light though.

Not sure how this compares but I also have a 28lb flywheel in my CTS-V (stock is 52lbs dual mass). I can not praise the lighter flywheel enough. It is probably the best mod I have done to the entire car.

I ran one for years...i was hesitant at first... but i was really happy i ended up upgrading. Great mod IMH0. Much easier to get around town without having to go push down the throttles so much. The great thing is 5th gear e-way...made it much easier to accelerate too without down shifting.

Now wot throttle runs are different...1st is def noticeable and 2nd is noticeable 3rd not so much..and 4th and 5th wot feels the same.

Your will be satisfied with it. It just takes some delicate handling of the clutch in most cars, when they upgrade to a LFW.

so how horrid would a SC 3L with a Spec 3 be to drive since it takes some delicate handling of the clutch?

Thanks for all the info. If it made that much of a difference for you guys then i'm sure i'll enjoy it alot.

Technically they dont 'add' hp though do they? they just increase the responsiveness of the throttle? Or does it show up when you dyno the car?

Whether or not it will show up on a dyno will differ between who you ask. I say yes (and have seen it in my car). You are reducing the rotational mass of the drive line which in turn frees up horsepower/tq to the wheels. Here is some good reading about how they work:
