I recently picked up a non-running SVT that had been sitting for 9 months. When I made the deal, the gentleman went to go find the key and realized that the mechanic never gave it back 9 months ago. Well the mechanic came up with a key and as I went to go put it in, the key didnt quite go in all the way and it wouldn't turn at all. Therefore I had to load the car on a trailer with the steering locked.
Two questions:
Is there a way to unlock the steering column without a key?

With it being a 98, do I have to replace the key, ignition, lockset, and external PATs to make this work?

to remove the lock cylinder the key need to be turned to the first possition. so if the key doesn't work it will have to be drilled out or removed in some other way.

To get a working key you will have to take the car to ford and have them program a new key if you don't have an original.

the easiest thing would be to find someone parting out a car and get the lock set so you can swap all the lock cylinders.

you don't need to repalce anything in the pats system

So I need a lockset, then drill mine out to put the new one in, then bring it to ford to have a key programmed?

yeah I think that is pretty much what you are going to have to do if you don't have any original keys ... some locksmiths might have the tools needed to program key but I am not sure about that

well bringing it to the dealer is kind of out of the question. I'm not towing it again.

Since it is a 98, PATs is external, right? The unit is located above and behind the glovebox. Therefore I should be able to get the lockset, ignition, key, and PATs module from a 98 and it all should work.

yeah that might work but I am not really sure. Since the key information is in the pats module swapping it in theory should make that key work in the car the unit goes in ....

worth a shot if you ask me to not have to tow or pay a dealer to do it
