Is the knock sensor SVT specific?

The Contour manuals all reference a knock sensor for the 2.5L and do NOT say that it's SVT-specific. However, I just found out that I don't have a knock sensor on my 98 SE, and another 2.5L 'Tour on the lot, (99 I think), doesn't either. So is it SVT-specific or year-dependant for the lower models? What about the Mystique & Cougar?

I think its alittle of both. my 99 contour doesn't have one, aircougars 99 cougar doesn't have one. but ctmystiques 98 mystique does have one ... seems hit or miss

According to the dealership all the Contour/Cougars were supposed to have one but I've seen a few 99 Cougars including mine that don't have one.

I think I answered my own Q because the wiring diagrams for 'Tours do not show a knock sensor from 3/98-5/3/99. All the rest DO show a knock sensor. I have yet to check the Mystiques or Cougars but I'd bet they're gonna be the same. So it must be a production date thing.

Meaning your car has no knock sensor, a turbo, a tune(Xcal?), and you don't have a problem with detonation?

correct .... 3L, NPG turbo, tune via xcal2 and no knock sensor ... as far as I know there is no predetonation. in fact driving from Carlisle, PA home to CT I got 24 mpg .... NPG has been working on the tune alot dialling it in, the A/F is just about spot on ...

You have to turn the knock sensor off when you add the turbo, its just too much noise. Honestly I don't think the knock sensor helps all that much, by the time the knock sensor catches it and drops your timing to nothing its already happend. Best to tune it out from the start.

Not to mention individuals who have had the knock sensor turned off in the software and are still getting phantom knocking!
