Is a Cold Air Kit much quieter than the Short Ram Air?

So for us behind on the times, what exactly is the difference between say the normal Contour/Mystique intake and the SVT intake? Any pics?

Just curious as I did not know there WAS a difference.:blackeye:

The SE has a flat square kind and the SVT has a large round one. With a K&N in both of them I'm not convinced there'd be a meaningful difference.

I'd suggest not trying to make the car faster at all. Go unbolt your exhaust after the y pipe. You'll never again think an open filter is loud.

It doesnt really get any noisier until almost half throttle. If thats too loud for you dont even think about touching the exhaust.

My last car was a 400 hp heads/cam/intake/headers/ram-air LS1 Camaro with an open exhaust cutout. So I know what loud is. And I also know the difference between ballsy loud and cheesy loud.

You guys also seem to have missed this comment I made earlier:

And I also don't wanna deal with heat-soak which I think was giving me trouble last summer despite installing a rubber maid heat shield.

Then why are you complaining about it being loud?

So the SVT intake is a ram intake than? Just looking to clarify that. I have the K&N filter on the left in the mystique, though I didn't really feel much of a change when I switched.

just before i got the svt, i put the k&n replacement in the GL stock air box, it gave a little bit more sound, and i felt better throttle response.

when i got the svt, it had the K&n drop in in the stock svt intake. but i switched right to the KKM intake, and i noticed a hige change in sound, (which i love getting on it) and better pull on the mid range rpms.

any open element filter will be louder then a stock air box.

as far as the heat soak goes, either live with the open element and get a heat shield, find a cold air intake, which would be a little quiet, or just get the K&n replacement filter..

its only an SE...

I understand where you are coming from.

You hear this car roar and you look over to see it barley moving fast. I also believe if its loud, it better be fast. If not don't bother and leave it quiet.

I guess i am a huge fan of the sleeper look and sound.

That is why i still have my stock mufflers. Many times i put my stock intake box on. Just so i can tell others its all show. Start it up and hey it sounds stock...:)

Well of course it ain't gonna sound like a v8 but it doesn't sound ricey. Sounds good but if you don't like it, that's cool, take it off. Leave it stock. Cuz the contour ain't gonna be fast, so I reckon it's always gonna sound "cheesy" to you since it doesn't go fast.

And I don't see how you have heat soak problems in SF. I don't have any 'problems' here in south georgia (no noticeable loss of power, but assuming there is some since obviously it gets hot, I did put pud's heat shield on).

And Harrry, everyone has different reasons for the sound levels of their car (though an open filter doesn't make any car loud). My escort was very loud and slow in a straight line but it kicked butt in autox. Every bit of weight savings and little extra power helps.

An open filter doesn't make any car loud?? Um.. maybe you miss typed that. It does make the car louder.

Like i said i like the car sounding like a sleeper. Quiet but fast.

I just turned the volume up on my TV one click. It is now louder but is still not loud. Get the difference?

The very eptiome of Rice.
I'll be the first to say it sounded pretty ricey (though better than 90% of hondas with those "mufflers" that add noise).
But when that car whoops your's on an autox course, I bet you wouldn't be calling it rice then.
There are go karts that have their own class that are as loud as my escort with a more annoying tone. They're also slower than my escort but that noise is still the result of a free flowing exhaust system. Just because these vehicles go left and right quickly instead of only straight doesn't mean they don't benefit from open exhausts. There are classes of racing out there for nearly every single car, of course some are faster than others but anybody going for all out performance will have a loud vehicle.

He's talking about everyday driving not road coursing.....

In a road course who cares how loud it is. Nobody really pays any attention to how loud cars are then. If your on the street for daily driving its a whole different story.

This guy is talking about driving on the street and his cold air intake is too loud for his liking. Simple, conclusion = personal reference.

I didn't say nothing bout road course racing. I'm talking bout autox, where you take a car right from the street to the course. Many people use their daily drivers.

And of course it's his personal preference. But one minute he said he had a loud camaro and then next he says a little ol filter made his contour too loud. Hahaaa.

You don't seem to get the fact that I like many other car enthusiats believe that if a car sounds fast it should BE fast and that being all loud and obnoxious but slow is total gay ass ricer BS so stop trying to convince me otherwise and get back on topic or just stop posting in my thread.

Billy don't get mad kremit is a good guy. he might be cocky but who isn't:shrug: .

Anyways i agree, that i hate the short ram intake. Others have said installing the cold air intake extension made a little more low end torque. Now there was never any dyno numbers to prove that. I am also going to do the cold air intake extension also.

I am hoping as i read, extending the tube will help reduce the noise of the air intake from inside the car. It will def be out of the engine bay.

The only thing is you gotta cut a 2.5 inch hole. Which is fine by me anyways. I'll just keep the metal circle piece i remove and reinstall it later before i sell the car.

The intake doesn't make it sound fast though. It makes it a little louder. And there are different definitions of fast. I'm sure there are people out there that consider your old camaro not fast, so think about that. Saying an intake on a contour makes it loud and obnoxious just means your a total gay ass old guy.

Harrry I am not a good guy don't tell lies.

And I'll stay outta the thread old guy since you requested it. I respect old people's wishes since they don't have long to live.
