Intake wrap question...

Hey guys,

I've installed a new Intercooler pipe on my car, but I want to wrap it to keep the air flowing cool, even though I'm boosting it I'd rather know that the air is as cool as possible especially with the summer months coming.

The thing is after I wrap it, I don't know what I can spray it with.

I've looked up the Thermo-tec hi-heat coating stuff, but that's only available in the US (i'm in Canada) and I'm not buying it because all the sellers ship it via UPS-ground (it's aerosol) and they'll rape me $50 on shipping charges.

Can I use Engine paint or enaml on it? Or some substitute spray I can find at the hardware store or auto store or something?

VHT ceramic paint is a decent alternative to the Thermo-tec. It's not quite as good IMHO but it sticks to anything.

After that then maybe Duplicolor 1200+ high temp paint with ceramic. (this is not their common engine high temp paint)

perfect, so some ceramic paint THEN some high temp paint? Do you think it'll net me similar results to the thermo-tec stuff?

What exact pipe are you taking about since i'm not sure what setup you have.

Intake to turbo?
Turbo to IC?
IC to Intake Manifold?

Depending on their location and your engine bay the turbo to IC pipe often times should be left uncoated since it can actually act as a heatsink and cool the air before it gets to your IC. Of course this depends on what temp air you're putting out of your turbo and the temp of the engine bay.

Ideally i would insulate the Intake to turbo, put a thermal dispersant on the pipe from the turbo tot he IC and then insulate from the IC to the intake manifold.

You might want to look into a blanket type covering as well. I've seen one that has velcro along the edges so you can wrap the pipe and velcro it together so it's also easy to remove if you need to.

Check out http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/ I've been meaning to try some of their stuff. They also make the above mentioned velcro on cover.

Duplicolor Hi-temp header paint seems to work great, just like thermotec. I tried it as a last resort, the Duplicolor Aluminum stuff looks and sprays just like the last can of thermotec I bought. NOt sure if it is the same but it seems to be working well on my volvo manifold.

okay, well I think I've seen the duplicolour stuff lying around in the store, I'l pick up a can of that and coat that ceramic exhaust wrap I ordered with it.

That is part of their ceramic line of paint. :p (1200+ degrees IIRC)
That is not their typical 500 or 700 degree paint lines like I said to avoid.

It is just like you to agree with me and word it differently Tom.
