well they found the grill for it in an office building bathroom light fixture... and the wheels needed to be about 6ft closer to the bumpers on both ends...
 
i think ford hit the mark on what they were shooting for with the "retro" thunderbird...and that was the car that was outselling the original vette.

Well that had alot to do with the fact that the original T-bird had the V8 and the Corvette didn't get the V8 until 55' and once the 56' Vette along, well, like they say, the rest was history. I don't know what they were thinking over there at Ford in 58' when the car went to a four seater and much larger, thank God the Corvette didn't do that but then again, they new the car's identity whereas Ford I guess didn't know that I guess.
 
Historically when ford is given the option they decide to make cars bigger and add passenger space rather than build a sports car. look what they did with the original cougar concept. somehow that turned from a v nose sport coup into the giant electric shaver offspring of what seems to have been a Buick Riviera and a 60's Mustang...
