On my way out the door, I noticed I had a flat rear tire. Not that big of a thing considering I just got new rear tires last night from tirerack. (Kuhmo Ecsta ASX's). Then I started wondering what other people budget things like this for their cars. So, what do you people do?

I'm just in debt . In fact, I'm going to purposely run over a nail on my right rear tire because it needs to be replaced, and I can't afford full price...(the left rear is nearly brand new)

sadly i dont budget for things like that,i just spend the money needed when something comes up

if that is an install problem, you should go back to whomever mounted the rubber or DIY if it's a nail.

if and only if I can't do it myself. I just go get it done, end of the story. regardless of the price, sometimes looking around and budgeting isn't worth the time ... especially for little things like such

$100/paycheque goes into a vehicle account to cover un-expected repairs and maintenance. Any excess is used to pay down the loan quicker, and then to save for the next downpayment.

Heh, happened to my 98. I didn't want to spend a dime, so I just put a crappy snow tire on that one. So now I have a snow tire on the rear right, a summer crap tire on the rear left, and some horribly crappy all-season (kelly tire, IIRC) on the fronts. It's great!

The best part is the thing goes pretty well in snow. Haven't had an issue yet.

I take the average repairs, replacements, costs (gas, oil, etc) per month and divide that in to the amount of miles I average per month to get an average cost of operation per mile.

I budget that plus 5% over that per month. If my costs get higher than a threshold I set, I simply put less miles on it, like a lease..

if you have a good budget for everything, there will be plenty of room for the ocassional flat tire.

I don't keep an open line item on my budget for car repairs, but I do add regular/expected maintenance into my budget as the need arises.

No "budget" yet. All unexpected repairs / maintenance go on the credit card and are usually paid off in 1 or 2 months.

I'm actually working on a budget by using only my credit card for the next few months. Since Nov. 19th, I have for auto-related things:
$30 - EZPass
$251.99 - gas
$280.00 - Maxima ignition coils (qty 3)

Still have to do 2 oil changes soon ($30 and $80), buy 3 more ignition coils when they're in stock, and whatever else might pop up. The Maxima needs front suspension work eventually.
