I just bought this car. The previous owner said it had something to do with ABS. but im not sure. The first time i take off after turning the car on, it makes a real bad grinding noise. But it doesnt do it at all until i shut off the car and restart it. The ABS light is on, by the way. It seems to be coming from the drivers side but im not 100% sure

Heres a vid-

Why would you buy that? If it has a faulty ABS module it's way over $1000 to replace. You have to pull the motor just to see it. I couldn't tell you what that noise is without inspecting the car. It's nothing that I've never heard. I certainly wouldn't continue to move the car.

Is that car manual or automatic? You took off so smoothly I couldn't really tell, but slight engine rev up sounded like manual. When started, a fraction of a second later sounds like another separate clunk or knock besides the main one you are talking about. If manual could be clutch. Could be broken flywheel if automatic. If fact, it could be about 50 things, ALL of which I would put before ABS. If ABS faults it just quits working, does not affect the car at all.

The ABS system does a "self-test" as soon as you start off. That's when it's making the noise. You need a new ABS controller, I'd say.

I'd hit a junkyard because yes - they are KILLER EXPENSIVE if you buy a new one.

Someone please enlighten me here. Granted (and obvious here) I don't know everything, please explain why ABS would cycle on even without depressing brake pedal, as in a takeoff from start. I thought the self test took place at key on time. I'm in a learning curve here..........are we saying that the damn thing can come on even when it's not called on to do work when it's defective?? That's just plain screwy. Just one more reason why I rendered mine inert.

It can do whatever it wants based on what the speed sensors tell it.

This is intresting for me too!
I still think the force needed to press the pads always is provided by stepping the pedal and ABS system according to wheel speed opens the valve to relief the pressure so to keep the wheels as tight as they do not stop! If I am wrong please correct me.
so ABS system can not apply force on the brake system, and press the pads, isnt it right?

You know what, I forgot traction control. That would work even without touching brake pedal. Sometimes I am sooooo stupid. I plead ahlzeimer's!

I am pretty sure that is right... It is more of an "Automatic Pumping System" in my eyes...

amc49 - its a manual. thanks for the compliment on the smooth takeoff :D

also just to let everyone know, my cruise control works... and my heat blows out hot... maybe i pulled the wrong fuse? dunno but it fixed my problem :)

Does it have any type of "traction control", NOT ABS alone?? Traction control I believe can apply brake to a spinning wheel without you touching the pedal.......the two systems are somewhat different.

and they have seperate warning lights if there is a fault in the systems ... however they are interconnected. and since its a SVT there is not traction control.
