HELP! I cant put gas in my car!

There was never a recall on this isssue.

It was an Owner Notification Program (01M04) to advise owners that the warranty had been extended to 10 years or 100K miles for the vehicles. Ford sent letters to registered owners at the time.

Steve

Yeah thats right! it wasnt a recall

At first Ford thought they had the fix with flapper and then a second problem reared -- the filled pipes some where defective. The vendor had a bad batch or something???? My 3/16" semi-rigid nylon tubing doesn't seem to be making do any difference anymore. So I guess it's some to do with the tank venting. These vents go bad to the filler pipe. Too bad it's such pain to lower the tank. I'm still looking into which vent valve it is. So far I'm able to get fuel in eventually so I haven't got that ambitious lately.
I remember hearing several guys replacing the whole fuel filler assembly and have fixed the problem. Except I forgot who they were so I cant' ask Darn!!!
Since loosing my contact at Visteon no more assistance on how it was engineered to work.

Are you using the same gas station as you always do? I've noticed that filling up at some stations, the pumps are pissy as hell. The one right in my town, and that I use all the time, has no problems with my car. The station on my way to work is a complete PITA. It takes 5-10 minutes to fill up because of the exact issue you have. Hell you can even try a different pump at the same station! There are two at my normal station that will set it off if I have the filler all the way open (past the point where the catch sits that lets you be lazy while filling gas for two minutes )

 I would just try a different station first. Also I would try a bottle of fuel system/injector cleaner in the tank. That stuff would help remove any gunk that might be holding the flapper shut! Just pour it in at a smooth pace and let it clean out the fill neck. I know it sounds crazy, but gas cleaners do strip away junk better then gasoline itself! I've cleaned enough valve covers off to know so!

i agree that different stations/pumps do make a difference. but i've had good luck with a pump one day then its horrible a week later.
the sunoco i used to fill up at would actually spit a little gas out just as it cut off. so besides the gas im losing for each time it cuts off (~50+ on a problematic hot fillup) i also end up with gas on the ground and sometimes on the side of the car ...

some days it just kicks off til about $5 and then its home free. other days i get up beyond $20 and its still fighting me. i usually quit by $15, or sometimes once the other customers start giving me weird looks for 'topping off' my tank 50 times.

i may try that gas cleaner thing though. im pretty desperate at this point.

I have tried 2 different places and 4 different pumps with no luck of it getter better I will try the cleaner as well. I'll post I'd I have any luck!

I hate getting weird looks and its even better by me cus I go to one of the cheapest places so there's always a line haha.

Not getting gas in car

Not getting gas in car

Well my 98 contour is doing the same with putting gas in. we broke off the flapper about 1 1/2 years ago when it got stuck trying to put gas in. I have never had problems with putting gas in other than having to watch to make sure it didn't run over. The other day I went to put gas in and I had the nozzle almost all the way out and it took me 10 minutes to put 2 gallons in the tank. You can see the gas coming up in the filler neck like it is full but it's not. Any ideas on what I will have to do? try again today since it wasn't as hot and it took about the same amount of time to get 2 gallons. It would take me almost an hour to get the tank filled up and with gas prices going up everytime you look at the sign and want to get it filled up. Bt the way I only have 1/4 of a tank.

Oh another little tid bit of info:

When you go to fuel up:
1) turn off the car
2) OPEN your gas cap first!
3) Then go pre-pay/swap your gas card
4) Don't rush to jam the filler nozzle in your tank
5) begin to fuel slowly, I can usually hear if mine is going to kick, so I just let off of the filler handle slightly.
6) Stand around and enjoy the sounds and sights of the gas station. There seem to be alot of people zoned out to the world around them when they get gas, its funny!

Also if its truely that bad that you can't fuel off the pump, you can get gas cans, fill those up, and take them home and slowly fill your car up without the embrassment (at least until you get your car fixed). Two, five gallon gas cans will fill a contour up pretty much to a full tank (I don't think I've ever filled mine up more then 12 gallons max anyway)

I share your feelings ZeroHour:)

Funny, having a Contour owner for 9 years and not knowing all these are acutally common problems till I discovered this forum couple weeks ago!..

My car had been like that since the day I bought it in August 1999(I am the second owner). I would think that it was a unique problem to my car but now I see almost everybody has this problem. There was a reason why Ford discontinued this model. With this and many other problems...

Anyways, I do just like ZeroHour recommends. Just take it easy. Never use full blast to pour the fuel in. I lock the nozzle at its slowest rate and then I feel when it is going to kick and release the lock. I put the last gallon or two by just feeding as slow as possible.
I have done this for 9 years and I don't plan on servicing the fuel tank.
It averages 5-6 minutes to fill my tank. No problem. I just watch what's going on around me:laugh:
And it is true that some of the gas station pumps are pain. I found that 7-Eleven pumps are the worst. You cannot possible run the nozzle at a slow rate. I never use 7-Eleven pumps... And I never used cloth hanger:)

This is what I have to do everytime, it works fine. I never knew there was a recall on it, bummer.

And it was a 10 year recall..... I had it done once but it really never corrected the problem...
Still a slow go to put fuel in it, put gas it when you're at the 1/4 tank level.

Seems I was mistaken, earlier, as it was an ONP, but as stated above it is long since expired for 99% of applicable owners.

Front end lower than the rear?

Front end lower than the rear?

Has anyone tried filling the while the front end is lower than the back end? I realize many stations don't have inclines. I have noticed when the rear end is raised, it will fill more easily. If I could get the picture off the Ford CD into an attachment, fat chance for those who have tried. You could see why, the vent is in the center rear edge of the tank and that vents just behind the fuel nozzle flapper/unleaded only flapper. (the original reason for being).
If its hot, the trunk is loaded and the station is level I'm in deep trouble. But if I can get the front end lower it usually makes a difference. I just luv all the EPA/greenie evap systems.
Also want to apologize for previous post, I get in hurry especially late at night don't get all the words typed that the brain throwing at the fingers, It's hell getting old!!!!!
Oh if anyone one knows the secret to getting pictures off the CD? I've tried several different tools all come out the same 3/4 of the pic is on the right side and right 1/4 (original) with be on the left side???
I don't think the evap-canister gets involved when filling????? Thankfully the EPA/greenies didn't get their way this vehicle would have had 6 evap-canisters attached. Ridiculous that they trying to turn the automobile into giant filtering mechanism!!! What the heck happened to common-sense?

Quite easy...

open the Ford CD to the page you want to "snag"..

press "Print Screen" (or PrtScrn) normally by the F12 key...
open Microsoft Paint (or any other graphics program)
and go to "edit" then "paste"

there's your screen.. you can either save as... and upload the entire screen.. or

you can drag a selection box around JUST the little picture you want, then right click that box and choose "copy". Go to "file" then "new" and make a new MSpaint picture... go back to edit, then paste again and you now have only the little picture you wanted.

save as... upload to photobucket or imageshack.us and then link on the forums.

Coat hanger?? Try your antenna!!!

Coat hanger?? Try your antenna!!!

Yes the method of using a coat hanger will open up the 'door' at the bottom of the filler tank, but where do you store your coat hanger? Not in the car or trunk as the gasoline on the hanger stinks.

Instead I just carry a cheap small wrench and remove my antenna to hold the flapper open when I fuel up. When I am done, just put the antenna back on.

Won't work with power antennas though.

So well I'm pumping I should keep the hanging in there? I didnt know if there was that much room?

You're merely using the hanger to "break" the gunky seal the flapper door had one time.. that's it.

i had the same problem with mine. I looked up the recall online and printed it out as back up. just in case the ford dealership was gonna try and back out of any recall work. if I remember it was a 10year/10000 thousand mile recall. I took my 89,000 svt contour and they did it!

Hello everyone and thank you for such a GREAT resource on all things Contour!
Here it is three years after the last post in this thread about this problem. I have yet to see a post about anyone actually having a shop REPLACE the Ford Filler Neck Assembly so, let me share with you where I'm at with this issue.

1998 Ford Contour
1FAFP66L1WK211317
One owner
Little old lady in Northern New Jersey

Since you cannot pump your own fuel in New Jersey, she has never had an issue first hand, but the shop that she uses said that she needs:
Filler Neck Assembly – Parts - $519.88
Filler Neck Assembly – Labor - $212.45
Intake Seal – Parts - $85.35
Intake Seal – Labor - $254.94
Total - $1,072.62

I agree; kinda steep just to pass inspection. I've found a shop here in Delaware County, PA that will beat the intake seal labor. Now I'm looking for a resource for the Filler Neck Assembly. Other than pulling one from a parts car at the yard by myself and cleaning it, then dropping Ms. Helen's tank and replacing it, I'm willing to find a new OEM or aftermarket replacement and then paying ~my~ mechanic to do the labor.

Does anyone reading this have a resource?
