Getting 5w-40 sythetic?

for you guys already running FI, I am wanting to run a synthetic 5w-40 in my turbo contour, i am having trouble finding it anywhere these days. a lot of them have been discontinued that were mentioned in the old forums.:shrug:

so my question is this, if you are running 5w-40 what brand is it and where are you getting it? if you have switched then what did you go with?

If this is your DD and gasmilage is a concern, I would run as low viscocity oil as I can.

No my turbo isn't consuming oil at all, the kit is still sitting on the bed in the guest room.:cool:
i have a clutch to install this weekend first.

gas milage isn't a concern, it isn't a daily driver, i have 2 other cars. i just want better protection during our rather hot summers.

As Redlineracer12 mentioned, Castrol Syntec makes a 10-40. That viscosity makes me nervous in a Ford, but a buddy of mine with a Bimmer uses it because the factory calls for that weight, so it should be readily available. 5-40 is an awfully wide viscosity spread. I'd stay away from something like that. 5-30 is great unless you have a particular reason for not being able to run it.

I don't agree. The 5w40 is a synthetic, newer synthetics don't have the issues that older multigrade dino oils did with a wide viscosity spread.

People use 0w40 Mobil One with great success in cold climate.
I think if you are in a climate that sees both hot and cold weather intermittently then 5w40 would be a reat choice.
In the hot desert I'd recommend 10w40 summer anyway, and maybe the newer 5w40 in winter. We are talking about a turbo car here that will run hotter than an average car with a lot more power than average so the tad thicker oil will be no issue.
 
Wally worlds the country over usually stock Rotella T synthetic 5w40 and Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40. There are several sites on the web that sell Motul 300V 5w40 (probably the best out there).

Also, check the labels on that Castrol Syntec, if it says "made in Belgium" its probably a pure PAO/Ester blend(extremely high quality base stocks), but if its made in the US it's probably a Group III/PAO blend, and a weaker add pack.
 
Run the thicker oil I just finished tearing my engine apart and every bearing was worn so since I had oil pressure the oil broke down to quick I was using 5-30 sythetic and it didn't save my engine. I would go with 5w-40 if you can get it I am from now on.
 
I bought some of "the turbo diesel truck" mobil 1 5w-40 synthetic last night at autozone. i happen to be in there stocking up on shop towels again and saw it, so i bought some. i usually buy my oil at O'rielly's since that is the only place in town i can get WIX filters and they didn't have any 5w-40? looks like i am going to have to go to two different places now for my oil change gear.

Once I have the turbo done for the Cougar, I have 2 cases of RoyalPurple 20w50 and plan on running it diluted with some 5w30 to thin it out a tad as I think 50 weight may be too thick :shrug:

i am not saying that's good or bad, but good god, you sure thats not gear oil?:laugh:

NAPA Gold filters are made by WIX. Just a little FYI.;)
 
I use the Rotella T syn in all my bikes 10w-40.

If it can handle the 16k rpms of a bike then in my book the oil is amazing :)
