Does anyone else have trouble putting gas in their car? No matter how I move/hold the nozzle it continually kicks the nozzle off as if I topped my car off. This even happens when I'm on E. And it has slowly become an everytime thing over the past couple of months. Even pumping gas at the slowest possible setting it kicks off about every $.50. So it takes forever to fill up and I look like a retard trying to pump gas. Any suggestions?

That happend to my friends v6 SE all he started doing was hold the handle down as he pumped gas......

Im not sure about the fix on that..... People will chime in as i heard this question asked before try some searches...best I can help:shrug:

there has been a problem with out cars where the flapper valve (if you call it that) will not open in the filler neck of the gas tank. iirc there was a recall for this for earlier cars. but later cars have had the same problem. some people have stuck coat hangers down the filler neck to try and free the "valve". but I'm sure someone that knows this problem will come in here with good information.

I would recommend searching. as i know i have seen good info on this before.

there is one BP gas station that will over flow on my car every time. so i do not go there anymore. my dad assured me its the gas pump that is the problem and not the car. my dad is in the gas/energy business.

Yea some stations are easier to fuel up at than the others but it still kicks at least 3-5 times on a good day per $30 of gas, other days its 15-20 times.

happens a LOT. happened to me. fix: stick pump all the way in, then pull out half way, then pump. instant fix. also, try reading a page or two back through the threads, you'll find quite a few posts about this.

I have tried the nozzle in almost every position and situation that I can think of. I'm to the point to where I'm thinking about carring a gas can in the trunk, fill that up and pour it into my car. I found that post. I am throwing a CEL and lately when I just start the car and let it run for a minute or so there is a very strong smell of raw fuel. Almost as if the car was carburated and I had pumped the gas and filled the bowl. Would a CEL possibly be causing this? I'm also thinking about trying one of those BAT caps.

1. SEARCH keywords "flapper valve" (should be an FAQ.

2. Re your CEL: Get the code(s) read. It is unproductive to speculate about the cause without the code.

3. Inspect the fuel delivery system carefully to see where the fuel is leaking or if it's coming from the engine compartment, etc.

Ford thought it was the flapper valve but now we find out it was a quality control problem with the supplier. The complete fuel filler pipe along with sometimes the roll over valve on top of the tank would stick and not allow air out of the tank that the fuel is displacing.
I have a letter from June 2001 program "01M04" 10 years or 100k miles. It says flapper valve but soon after the letter was sent out I heard that dealers ordered a flapper valve and got the whole filler-pipe to replace.
I usually have trouble with mine on hot days and have been on the road for several hours (heat soak). Then even my dingus I have (that worked intermittently) where it bumps open the flapper it still makes no difference.
Ah the EPA and there evaporative emissions.
The chance of going to the junk yard and going thru all the work to swap the filler pipe might get with the problem also.
The last time it happened I was out of town it happen I got mad I open the trunk lid and shook rear side as hard as I could. I helped a little.
Two days later hotter on the road --not one problem??????
Also check hose/lines back to the canister and from filler down to the tank none are pinched or restricted. Also the rollover valve mounted on top of the tank can stick also. There is also vent hole to the right side of the filler cap that has a hose that run down to the canister. At certain times air is drawn in while engine is running--I only mention this several winters back while spraying the salt off with the engine running the water hit the gas door and this loud sucking noise. Could figure out what it was oops found it I had to remove the canister a dumb out the water not to mention using many cans of dry gas. Latter I found out the mode the evap was purging the canister.
I could have had filler up replaced at no cost but decided that old just to leave well enough along. Something else would break in the process and might not be covered.

Fuel fill problem

I will agree that it's not the flapper. I have tried the "coat hanger" trick without success. I am very puzzled lately because my car has the problem all the time now. Even when I use the same gas station pump I always do. Before that the problem only occured once in a while.
It's definitely something in the way the air is vented.
Do you suppose I can get a new fill pipe for free? I'm not over 100K but I've got to be close to 10 years.
