I have a 2000 Contour SE w/ 180K miles on it, car won't start...now I haven't replaced the fuel pump on it yet. Should you be able to hear the pump kick on when you turn the key? A couple of years ago I changed the fuel filter and I thought I could hear the pump kick on when I turned the key, but wanted to comfirm with you guys.

you should be able to hear the pump prime when you turn the key to the run position. sometimes its easier to hear if you buckle the seat belt so the chime for that doesnt come on.

not likely, although if its not flowing enough fuel then you could end up with some lean codes. there is no code just for the pump though.

Just wondering, would a fuel pump through a CEL if it's bad?

I don't believe it will. pull out the rear seat bottom and have someone else cycle the key to see if you can hear the pump. then check to see it its getting power if you can't hear it prime.

I'm not hearing anything when I turn the key, so it's more than likely the fuel pump. I tried to start the car yesterday and it started but only for a couple of seconds. In terms of the fuel filter, I planning on changing it in the next couple of months. Thanks for your input guys.

depending on who you talk to, the fuel filter should be changed about every 30K miles. for most people thats about every 2 years.

i change them every 6 months on all my cars/trucks , its cheep insurance ya know , i didnt change one for like 2 years one time and the lines seized and broke when i tried to replace it , . , i wasnt trying to bash the guy , just saying its probably a better idea to change it a little more offten

right after i got my car the fp went out on it first it got weak then it took a crap. the easiest way i have ever found to see if your getting pressure is unhook one side of the fuel line to or from the fuel filter when you turn the key you should get a pretty strong stream of fuel anything less and its time for a pump.
