I just checked my oil 2 1/2 weeks ago, well i was driving earlier and i heard slight engine knocking, i quickly pulled over and found to my disbelief i'm down 2 and a half quarts. I got some oil from bp and got oil level back to regular. Still the knocking persits. I'm about 200 miles over my 3,000 mile oil change. I'm getting the oil changed tomorrow I'm hoping it will cure the problem. If the knocking continues am I f'ed is it time to start saving up for the 3 litre? My mom's going to whoop my @$$ if thats what I need to do. If my engine is permently f'ed up should I just take it EXTREMELY easy on the motor untill I've saved up enough for the 3 litre and if so please everyone give me an estimate. This is my only transportation to work and I'm going to freak out if it denotates on my way to work. Please everyone I need all your opinions asap.

Sorry to say, but if your oil level went low, and you heard a knocking... its time.

Ouch man..Umm 200 miles over isnt bad but being 2.5 quarts low is not good at all..After you filled it back up some and the knocking is still there sounds like you got yourself a problem there..You sure its a lower end knock..Might be your lifter/roller rockers etc..Mine use to tick very bad then one day oil was leaking from under my car..the roller rocker went threw the vavle cover.

I can't say for sure, but on start up its a mean loud knocking, once it gets to idle it goes away but as soon as you give it a lil gas *bam* the knocking comes back. I'm so disapointed I allowed this to happen. I always check my oil every few weeks and I was just going to change the oil tomorrow. I just don't understand how magically I go down 2.5 quarts in a lil over 2 weeks, it just boggles my mind. My car's never sucked down oil like that in its whole life for as long as I've owned it.

I got the oil change today and oil gunk removal stuff done to it. The knocking is still there. The knocking isn't horribly bad so I'm wondering how long my motor will last with easy granny driving until i can save up enough for the 3 liter swap. Anyone know how much that runs? I'm not concerned about labor right now just parts and port matching the block to svt uim and lim.

There is no way to know for sure how long the engine will continue to run. It may run like it is for months, or it may die on your way home tonight.

Do some searching in the 3L forum, both here, and on the old forums (link from the main page) There are a number of threads devoted to a budget 3L buildup, including one todras put together that has most of the part numbers you would need as well. I think you could get everything done for ~$1k doing all the work yourself, but that doesn't include a lot of the things you really should change out while its apart, like the clutch slave cylinder/ throw out bearing assembly, clutch disc and pressure plate, etc.

I did mine with port matched 3L heads for ~900 Look at LKQCorp.com for low mileage 3L. I got the motor with 4K miles for 400 The rest was seals, gaskets, bolts, porting kit, oh and all new fluids ~80.

How far is bartlett from Naperville, I might be able to help.

Naperville is about 25-35 mins. from bartlett as for the clutch componets i changed all that about 4500 miles ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you go for the rebuild or want my help getting parts together just let me know. I am finally finishing my build this weekend and have plenty of first hand knowledge to help you with.

There is no way I could spend that money and come out with the same engine. But I couldn't see me spending that kind of money on my car. I would just fix it. My car is a 25 footer. It looks good from there but up close you notice all kinds of defects.

If your car is worth something to you then I would go for the best that you can give it. If its something that you just need to drive back and forth to work then you should just fix it.

Just my thought.

I'm going for the rebuild, as i am new to this I only have a slight idea as to what i would need to rebuild it. I would need a complete list of everything I need to get so I can go over this with my parents as I will be borrowing money from them to do the project. I plan on doing the 3 liter ported to the svt intakes. I'm also wondering if I need to purchase other parts as they may now have been damaged due to the knocking and it got worse today so I decided to just put the car in the garage, I dont want to drive it and dentonate it and cause even more problems. I need to get this beast back on the road asap as I have a job and this is my only way of trasportation.

3L form is your saving grace :). You can live and die by that forum, especially in your case I think having it done will be an adventure as well :D

Run some heavier oil or add some heavy Lucas oil additive. You're going to replace the motor anyway plus this may prolong the bearing. This is a very temporary fix but has stretched some miles from an old motor I had.
