I know the pads and some other things are different from the E0 to the E1, but my car is such a mutt I don't know what ones I should get. Can you tell by the VIN as to which one I need? Stazi said you can tell by the amount of the rotor that isn't used.

stazi would be correct. the eo's cover more of the rotor from the outside to the inside. while the e1's cover less of said area, but more area from side to side

I found the templates in the Bat cat. Very nice info. Now if we could only "borrow" that pic and throw it up on this site.

Yeah, just use the template from BAT to figure it out.

It's tough to figure out which pads you have just by using a build date, build number, or year as Ford switch back and forth between the 2 styles.

Even after the switch in 98.5, they switched back again in 99, and then again before 00.

The E1 pads have a nicer selection to pick from since they are the same pads as any other Contour, Mystique or Cougar, but the E0 pads do cover a larger area. They just have a small selection to pick from since it was only used on certain SVT's and Mondeo's and nothing else.

iirc werent the e0's used on a cosworth escort?
If your car uses the early production pads a lot of places will only list them under a part number for a '97 Contour. I just went through that getting parts for my E1 from Napa, the '98 SVT Contour pads they ahd in their system were wrong, but a '97 with a 2.5 was correct.

This was nightmare for me, as Checker auto gave me E0 pads when I asked for pads for my 2000 SVTC. Took me quite a while to figgure what the heck was going on.
