Concerned about my Duratec ST

Hi everyone, I am here seeking advice!

A few months ago I purchased a Mondeo ST220 which uses the Duratec ST engine; albeit a Duratec 30 with a few slight modifications.

I have done 5,000 miles in the car and no complaints at all, however I think I can feel a very weak misfire at idle; and maybe at around 2,200RPM (in neutral). I cannot feel it while moving.

It really is very subtle and I would wager that 99% of my passengers wouldn’t notice it, that if it is a misfire. I have been speaking with a competent mechanic who insists I should get to the bottom of it straight away as it will encourage the shells to spin; which would leave me with a £5000 bill for a new engine.

If it is misfiring I have been informed that the following could be the cause:
1. Worn plugs, or leads, or coil pack.

2. Air leak in plenum chamber or one of the vacume hoses, check especially the ones that come off the rocker covers and go to the plenum.

3. Bad injector

4. Blocked cat

5. duff lamda or O2 sensor your car has two of each. These can be tested with a continuity meter.

Before I go replacing everything, I would like to hear people’s opinions on the matter. I listened to the exhaust note to see if I could hear any puffs or bangs but it all sounded good to me. I have uploaded two video clips.

I am aware of the slight ticking noise, but this is a minor fault that a lot of ST’s suffer from. Is there something amise as I hold the revs at 2,200? (20-28 seconds).

Another note, would a misfire affect the cars performance?

If it’s of any concern the car has done 60,000 miles and was serviced 7,000 miles ago, I have also just had to top it up with a litre of oil. I drive the car hard but forgiving.

Despite this ‘shudder’ the car is still silky smooth and returns 32mpg over a tank and will still hit 6,000RPM in 6th gear with no problems at all. So perhaps it’s a characteristic of the car?

All advice is appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance.

I'd lean towards plugs and wires first. Not terribly difficult to pull the plugs and inspect them. And not terribly expensive to replace.

Fwiw, keep in mind you will have to remove your upper intake manifold since its an ST220, but also note that the brace at the rear of the manifold is slotted so no need to remove the bolt completely, just loosen it and the manifold will slide out of the brace.

Just to clarify, I'm at work and was unable to watch the videos you linked, so my comment about plugs and wires is based on your description.
