Just had a Torsen installed with a New SPEC Stage 1 and thought that the SPEC flywheel was the source of clutch chatter....

Its not as bad as my friend's SVT Focus SPEC combo but its a nice faint chatter when the clutch is out at Idle...is this normal?

that's a relief....because its really faint...i only noticed it after my head unit was stolen....and i was sitting at idle and heard the chatter...

what causes the chatter?

What your are hearing is not clutch chatter. Clutch chatter is not a noise, it is a vibrating pedal during engagement.

What you are hearing is transmission gear roll-over noise, and yes, some is completely normal with this transmission. It seems to be worse with a lighter flyweel.

It seems to be not bad at all when you have your internals coated at Haines Motorsports. Mine is gone 95% of the time with a Stage 1.

If it's not the clutch, but the transmission itself, then why did I not hear any kind of chatter until having a spec clutch installed?

Good question. I can only guess its because you have changed the spinning assembly on the end of the trans input shaft, the clutch. It is different and causes different vibrations (noises) than the factory one did. Just disturbing the wear pattern on the gears can effect the noise characteristics so that even a new factory clutch may create more roll-over noise than before.

no...over on plymouth road in ann arbor....Willowtree Apartments my new complex...2 days after i moved in....came out to a busted window and 2 inches of snow in the car....

the noise is super faint (tiny clicking) and i'm pretty sure the only reason i can hear it is cuz my dashboard has a big gaping hole where all the black trim and head unit was... only thing left is the HVAC controls...ordered a new head unit and need to be more careful....

Could it be the throw out bearing?

Could it be the throw out bearing?

Did you use the throw out bearing that came with the clutch kit? After installing a few SPEC clutches in other vehicles I have learned never to use the plastic throw out bearing supplied by SPEC and order a replacement through Ford. Everytime I've used the SPEC bearing I would get a repetative squeak (could be described as a click) when I am idling with the clutch depressed.

I think I have the Spec TOB somewhere in a box, but I have a genuine Ford TOB in my car.

But it is HIGHLY doubtful that the noise people are hearing in our trannies, with the SPEC clutch, is coming from the TOB. Gear rollover noise seems to be the culprit everytime.

its gotta be gear rollover noise (light clicking at idle)....cuz it goes away when the clutch is depressed and comes back immediately when clutch is let back out in neutral....its rebuilt tranny, new synchros, Torsen, SPEC Stage 1 w/ SPEC TOB...

can you describe that sound at idle, similar to that of a damaged pulley?
when i am at idle, mine chatters/whistles just like a bad pulley. When i predd the clutch, it goes away, and then comes back on when I let it go. I was told that the bearing is starting to go bad. and it is the spec 1 with stock flywheel
