Does anyone else experience this on their duratec SVT? Man, my oil is at about 3,300 miles right now, and is still very clear and clean. at 3,000 it was down maybe half a quart so 5 1/2, so I added half to bring it up to 6 again. My engine has 146k.

BTW: its not synthetic oil either.

mine usually is still pretty clean at 4000 but its syn i use mobil 1 supersyn 15000 but still change it at 5000:shrug:

It mostly depends on the oil, not the condition of the engine. Some oils stay golden while others turn dark after 100 miles but it doesnt have anything to do with being dirty or ready to change.

I think I've noticed that cars with K&N filters (instead of stock paper) the oil gets darker/dirtier faster. I still use K&N, though.

You might be right about that. The extra dirt they let in and the filter oil both show up in a used oil analysis. Its one of the main reasons I'm glad that oil-less performance filters are out now.

I notice that same thing when I use Pure One (or its Bosch clone) oil filters. I usually use Motorcraft oil filters, but I'm starting to wnader if there would be benefit to always using Pure One.

The Pure One is a great filter for doing extended change intervals with because of is sturdy synthetic media but if 5000 miles is all you do then the MC is a great purolator filter with the correct bypass valve.

I've been using amsoil oil/filters for about ~50k miles now changing every 7500 and my oil is always black when I change it. I was running the k&n ru-3530 for the past 20-30k miles.

I've never seen an oil that didnt come out of the engine black after more than 3000 miles. In fact the Delo oil I used in my Mazdas went in black and came out just as black which I always got a kick out of. Though truth be told that K&N filter certainly wont help the oil color or life.

I'm pretty sure they were talking about K&N OIL filters. Not AIR.

doh! Didn't even know k&n made oil filters. I was wondering how my air filter was making my oil dirty :blackeye:

Well technically they dont make them themselves. Champion Labs who makes the Mobil 1 filter also makes the K&N oil filter. That being said the K&N air filter is known for letting in more dirt compared to a stock paper filter or aftermarket dry media filter like the AEM or AFE.

I think if you have a clean engine to begin with, your oil will come out clean too. I am not saying if you run it past 5000 it will be clean, but definatily past 3,000. I have never seen black "new" oil. I have only seen tan colored oil and black oil when left in the car too long.
