took my v6 2.5l tour to the dealership today, and they said that my servo is on the way out, they kinda rushed the explaination when i talked to them on the phone, said there were codes about 2/4 band, said there was lots of chatter coming from it, i know they replaced the TSS, but from reading some of the posts, couldn't the servo rod just be adjusted? or just get the bolt, someone on here did for $0.40 Only good thing about my visit was that they didn't charge me for the work. and very sad looking when my gf went to get the car. i do have someone with a junkyard looking for a replacement tranny, but is it worth looking into?

There is only one band for both 2 and 4. Unusual for a servo to go bad, but it can be replaced in the car if you really think that is the problem. The most likely case is that the 2/4 band anchor is breaking. To replace requires the trans to be torn down to replace the band (which has the anchor built in).

If the 2/4 band is broken, unplug the ROUND connector on top of the trans under the battery. If the car does not move you KNOW the band is broken. If it slips, it is likely the band is in the process of breaking.

If you can replace a trans on your own, you have the necessary skills to replace the band. And if you avoid the temptation to do a complete trans rebuild then it can be done for under $200, less than a junkyard trans. I assume the rest of the gears work well and the oil is not burnt.

unplugging the mlps

unplugging the mlps

My only question is this, when i unplug the mlps do i unplug it first and then start the car? or do I unplug it while the car is running? it seems to move if I go from park right to 2, the only weird thing is the 2-3 shift the rpms drop to 1k then it shifts to 3. the other is that once it gets warm, say a 1/2 hour of driving and i stop and start driving again the o/d off light begins to flash. it hasn't done this since the last visit to the dealership. maybe I should try the shift-jr kit or order a vb with the sonnax valve updates off ebay. i already have the shift kit but i don't want to damage the vb.

NOT the mlps

NOT the mlps

To test for a broken band.

1. Unplug the transmission under the battery tray, it is a round connector and NOT the mlps connector. It has a clip that must be removed first.

2. Start up the car, put it into any forward gear. Unplugging the trans makes the trans work only in 2nd in the forward gears and reverse.

3. If the car moves well with the trans unplugged, then your band is not broken, but may be slipping. IF the car does not move at all, then your band is probably broken.

Good luck
