I would like to get a car alarm soon. I am just beginning my research and I know nothing about them. I would like something relatively inexpensive, but with motion/touch detection, where just about anything that touches the car will set it off, not just pulling up on the handle. I have heard of alarm wires being cut by theives, so would it be better to relocate the battery to the trunk and remove the release cable so only a key will open the trunk? I hope to keep the price under 200ish, so if it was your money being spent, what would you reccommend and why?

TIA

Some of my thoughts since nobody else has posted.

Pulling up on the handle will not set a car alarm off unless the handle is connected to the interior lighting system, which the 98+ Contours are not. (I'm not sure about pre98s.)

Easy way to disable the trunk release cable is to flip the orange switch that is located in the trunk by the latch. You may want to do this regardless of alarm, since your Cardomain states you have a sub.

I had an alarm that went off with every little noise and I will tell you it is more annoying than worth it. You can't park the car on the street, since even the quietest car driving by will set it off. You can't even park near the street, since booming stereos and loud exhausts will set it off.

The good thing is that most aftermarket alarms have a variable setting so you can set the sensitivity. (Mine did but I never changed it)

If you're this paranoid, your best bet is a paging alarm system. Not only does the paging remote control offer an incredible range, but it's very convenient to know if it is your car whose alarm is going off. It might be out of your price range. I got mine through shady means (using friend's BB discount) but I think they run ~$350 installed. Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, getting it installed is the best idea. The only disadvantage is that the remote eats batteries, I replaced mine once every 1.5 months. But it was AAA battery so it was cheap to just by an 8-pack.

As for relocating the battery, it's not really worth it especially if you get a paging alarm. My alarm had a mercury switch installed in the hood so lifting the hood set it off. By the time they lift the hood, locate the battery and cut the wires, a few seconds have passed and your remote will have beeped at least once.

Pre98s do... not sure if you need a lighting package for it, but my "normally" equipped Zetec 96 GL would turn on the interior lights when you pulled up on the handle.

Never payed attention on the SVT...

I found an Autopage RF-405A on eBay for $45 shipped to my door, and I installed it myself with help from www.the12volt.com. If you read up and take your time it's actually pretty easy to do. It has trunk, door, and motion sensors. If you touch the car, nothing will happen, but if you knock on it it will sound a warning honk. If you pound on the window it will set off the alarm. Cars passing by won't do anything but a rumbling truck will set off the warning honk.
Like Rougar said, you really don't want a super sensitive alarm, because you'll eventually get so used to false alarms you'll ignore it when it's real.

lol my alarm acts up from time to time. You can shake the hell out of the car (which should set it off) but nothing happens. You tap on the windshield once and the thing goes berserk!

I would do what Mr, Purple says though and really if your going to go through the trouble of getting an alarm get a good one, do some research and if you have too spend some money.

I have to suggest a Compustar, they make some of the best alarms out there. I got one (from ebay) after my system was stolen a month after i bought my car:mad:, and have been very happy with it. They do lack in the instruction department, so if you plan on doing it your self, take your time and DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! Wouldn't want you to fry something!

Heres on with an automatic starter since you have an atx..
