Dodge and Mitsubishi have a VERY close relationship and for a time were essentially the same company, much like Ford and Mazda. Many small car dodge motors are built by Mitsubishi. Just like my 91 escort uses a Mazda motor and transmission. Interchangeability like that exists, but only among certain segments of the market. The Ford Contour is basically an american version of the European Ford Mondeo and uses all Ford parts. Luckily, many parts from our cars are interchangeable with some other ford vehicles, namely the taurus and escape.
The turbos would work just fine if you made manifolds and all the accessories, but you would never fit them.
VR4s arent junk. The transmissions are just made of the most brittle glass Mitsubishi could find, and are filled with tons of hammers to break the glass parts incase you arent able to do so yourself.
I am not particularily knowledgable about CSVTs, I just have a lot of general knowledge that is applicable to many of the specifics of this car.
I cant answer your question on the NPG kit, I have never put one in a contour, I dont imagine it is any harder than turbocharging any other motor with a well built kit. Have a look inside the forced induction section for more information. There should be several threads in there detailing turbo builds.
Going to
http://www.nautilusperformance.com/ and reading up would help you a lot as well. I will tell you that that type of upgrade would be fairly involved, and you would find quickly that there are a lot of other places on your car that become a weak link once you start putting all that power to the wheels. Differential, Trans, Clutch, yadda yadda...... Plus you would also want to add quite a few things not included in that kit, gauges, wideband, subframe connectors, LSD.....
Honestly, I think most peoples experiences with turbocharging a contour will tell you that whatever they spent on the turbo kit, they spent around the same amount on other upgrades and parts to go along with it. Keep in mind I am by no means saying that NPG is selling an incomplete kit. They are selling a high quality kit that appears to have more included than you would get from nearly any other vendor. Plus their technical support and customer service is second to none.
