reluctor rings -Quick response appreciated- possible car buy

Hey guys! I'm new to the forums and looking to buy a 2000 SE, DOHC contour.
I likethe contour's styling, power and reliability and they seem like generally easy/relatively cheap to maintain and work on, for the do it yourselfer.

Anyway, the car I'm looking at has these same symptoms with the ABS very weakly engaging at low speeds. It does not seem to affect stopping really, but I suspect the reluctor/halfshafts need replaced.

Question 1 - the CV boots themselves look fine, so what is the worst that would happen, if I bought the car and continued driving it 'as is' (ie with the bad reluctor rings)? Is this bad for the ABS unit/system, b/c to me, it seems that it is basically engagin the ABS, at least partially, everytime you use the brakes. If halfshafts/reluctors are notreplaced soon, could this turn into a more costly issue?

Question 2 - Do both shafts have reluctor rings, or need I only isolate/replace 1 of the shafts that does?

Thanks in advance, this will help determine if I buy this vehicle!

I would do a visual check on the reluctor rings and see if they are indeed cracked, but most likely they are. Not replacing them would not hurt the abs system because it is just activating the abs and not doing any damage. However I would recommend replacing the CV shaft that has the broken reluctor ring ( may be both are broken like mine were ) because at times, at least in my case, the abs may activate when braking at higher speeds which could be dangerous ( in my opinion ).

I found some brand new complete front driver and passenger axles for 140 for the set. My question is, is it difficult to remove the hub from the axle and is it difficult to remove the axle from the car?

If it turns out that the hub is tough to remove, I'll buy new hubs as well because i found them cheap too. If someone could point me to a thread about removing the axles that'd be excellent.

Thanks,

Paul

cool, thanks. Sounds like this is not as critical an issue as I thought, but something that will probably need addressed eventually, or just get used to the 'pdeal buzz'. Thanks for the replies!
