Blown Head Gasket

Well, I believe my head gasket has blown (getting exhaust through the overflow tank). Has anyone replaced their head gasket? How hard is it on these cars? I have a 2.5 and I love my car and don't want to throw it away. But if I take it to a shop I can see the dollar signs building. I've replaced head gaskets on other cars. But I've also done the alternator and starter on this car. Seeing as how much of a ••••• it was to do this I have a feeling the head gasket will be just as hard. On my old 67 mustang 302 I could have the heads off and swapped out in a couple of hours. My 84 LN7 (4 cylinder overhead cam) took a couple of days. Any clue on how long this will take? Thanks for any input.
 
I'll love hearing a proper response to this. I was scared of that day with my 96 mystique, duratec. had 260'000 km on it, but the transmission lost pressure (internal valves and seals I think) before the engine gave up. All I used to read at the time, was 18 hour jobs.
How on earth could it take 18 hours to do that. But I believe it.
 
It would likly be cheaper to swap in a 3L than repair a blown head gasket on the 2.5L.

You will likely have to remove the motor to get the rear head off anyway. To properly repair it I blieve both mating surfaces have to be machined. So, with the removal labor, machineing costs, materials costs. You have to be approaching 500-600 which is the price of 3L in most areas of the country.

Any Idea how much it cost to replace the whole front clip. My rack is also shot, which is why I wanted to do the head gasket job myself. Add the cost of that to a new rack and pinion and I might as well get another car. The hardest part is that the car runs perfect. I can go anywhere within a half hour of my house.
 
What about Steel Seal. It's a very good product. http://www.steelseal.com My uncle and I have been using it for 10 years and only a few didnt work, thats because they were just to far gone. I just did a 91 S10 V6 last week with it and it sealed in about 2 minutes. Its not a temporary fix either. Just check out the site. If you do it use the Steel Seal please PM me because i will write the way i've done it which is different from there instructions but better.
 
This stuff is amazing. I put it in thinking "I just threw away a bucket of money". But it works, it really works.
