Anyone tried Amsoil?

I used amsoil for a while in my engine when it was just as cheap as Mobil 1. Then they raised the prices by almost $1 a quart here so I went back. Stuff worked great and with their filter, I couln't complain.

Depends on the type. I used the stuff that says you could go 1 year or 25,000 miles since I had to drive 130 miles every day. I never let it get that far up in miles, just around 10K or so since the filter was good for 12K miles---or so they say. I am sure it was still good, but I didn't ever want to risk it.

I have never personally never used it but have several friends who run it in their stangs and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Just because the oil looks black doesn't mean it's time for replacement, the black color is just that, color. It comes down to how well the filter is removing the particles and how well the oil itself is fending off 'breakdown'. You can get a ruff idea by 'rubbing' the oil between your fingers for dirt but to check for anything else you need to have it tested. Now granted you do have to change it eventually but my father has gone 25k miles (using 25k AMSOIL) on his 02' Outback three times and has no issues whatsoever. When I do change it after 25k the color is fairly black but you still can't feel how 'clean' it is compared to ‘dino’ oil after after 3-5k miles (with a basic filter).....

I actually know of someone that uses the 25k AMSOIL filter but puts in the cheapest 'dino' oil you can find. He just tops it off when needed and does a full change when it's time, just like when you use AMSOIL. You'd be surprised how much cleaner the oil stays and he's been doing this for about 150k miles with no problems.....

I think it's safe to say I'm a pretty big fan of AMSOIL....

IIRC the black color indicates contamination from the combustion process. Contamination can be from unburnt fuel or blowby or any number of things. Eventually this contamination will hurt the oil's ability to lubricate. That's when "breakdown" happens.

I agree, but I was just getting at the point of you don't have to change it as soon as you see discoloration.....

ALSO, and I feel like a moron for asking but what does 'IIRC' mean...? I've seen it a thousand times but still have no idea what it means.....

I know on a diesel most of the color change is caused by soot, carbon deposits from the combustion process and it is usually the cause of a lot of your premature engine/turbo wear. Well thanks for all the input guys. What weight should I use? 5w30 or 5w40?

I've had the full synthetic 5-30 Amsoil in for almost 15,000 miles now. I think I've changed filters at every 5k and I'm about due now as well. I like the extended drain intervals over the winter months when I don't feel like crawling under the car to change the whole thing.

I'll change and fill it again with Amsoil full syn. at 20,000 miles.

FYI my car has almost 200,000 on it and doesn't burn or leak any oil. Most of it's life I've run full synthetic Mobil 1 every 5-6k. They really can go longer than that. Use the standard Motorcraft filters - they have them at Wal-mart for about $3.

I run Ford Honey in my MTX.

Edit - I also used the Amsoil motor flush and I'll continue to use it. When I changed my valve cover gaskets at 190,000 my internals were nice and clean. Good quality oil will make your car run for a long time.
