Air Con problem

My wife's Mystique is having an odd A/C problem.

All fan speeds work as expected.

When set to regular cooling blows cool air.

When set to A/C blows cold air.

When set to MAX A/C blows full speed but warm air.

Is this likely to be just the switch? It's not quite making sense to me how the A/C works ok, but when on max not at all.

Thanks guys,

Make sure the AC compressor is engaging in all the positions you mentioned. The only difference between max AC and regular AC is that on max the system is on recirculate.

Probably a bad mode switch with an open circuit that turns on the compressor in MAX position.

Only thing that makes sense.

Finally got this switch changed out ... and everything appeared to be great.

Started up ... turned the switch and A/C engaged with maximum chilliness !
Seemed great ... went for a few drives and it all ran fine.

Same day ... a little later though ... start car and turn on A/C gives great cold air ... then after driving a while it seems to die.

Other than this it seems to be fine. The air really is ice cold, just like new. The system was recharged about a year ago as we replaced the rotted out condensor. When it works, it's awesome but seems to just quit.

I can confirm the system cycles and I can hear it.
I can confirm that when it 'dies' the system does NOT cycle.
The system when running well also does NOT short-cycle.

I am going to take a HUGE leap of faith here and assume that the levels of coolant are good, and that I have no leaks. This is because it was just repaired, cycles properly when working, and blows cold air without short cycling ... also because I cannot read the pressure I want to explore any other simplistic alternatives before looking at this.

Any thoughts before I turn it over to the pro's ?

May be as simple as an excessive clutch gap.

Since you "cannot read the pressure", perhaps you can measure the clutch air gap.

It means "stop post whoring", waves360.

Your excessive posting with one or two word replies, "hahahaha" or "wow" as the subject matter is doing nothing more than take up space. There are ways of increasing your post count that are actually helpful to the other members. I would, personally, suggest introducing yourself in your regional forum and perhaps get acquainted with those who live near you.. this will "kill two birds with one stone" as you'll get to hear from those you may meet in person, AND raise your post count.

sorry RAY. I dditn mean it really. i really wanted to kno what recharge meant but i c what you saying about the two three word post yea sorry bout that and sorry if this one is takeing up space.

This has been a useful thread for me. I have had the same set of problems so I took the clutch plate off the a/c pump and removed the only washer there. It was less than 1/2 inch in diameter and fit down inside the splined post. Once back together the a/c now engages. My measured air gap was a little more than .035 inches. It is not really warm out today so I can't say with certainty that this was a fix. Autozone sells only the complete clutch assy for $99.00
