Not a troubleshoot, just an informational post. I've read the 98 SVTs have an external PATS unit that connects to the PCM.

1. Where is it located?
2. Is there a part number anyone knows of?
3. Is it the sole recognizing unit of a PATS key? In other words, if I swapped ignition cylinders and the PATS unit, would the car start, or does the PCM need to be changed/reprogrammed too?

Thanks everyone.

Anyone?

Sorry, I hate bumping my threads, but I could really, REALLY use this info right now... does anyone even know wherre to look to find out?

PATS info..

PATS info..

I believe its the key, (obviously) a transmitter, and a receiver.

The transmitter is located on the end of the ignition cylinder, and the receiver is in the passenger kick panel. I'm pretty sure you can program any key to the car. Ill try and find my FSM to double check.
I've been told , that the igniton cylinder has numbered tumblers and you rearrange them to match the key. Not sure if thats true or not.
Hope this helps,
Mark

It does, thanks! I know on the post 98's, it's all built into the PCM, but this means if I can track down the reciever, transmitter, key, and cylinder from a car I can probably wire it into mine.

Should this be the same on SVT's and SE's?

Going to beat this dead cat even though it's already been posted....

The key contains a chip which has a code stored on it. When the key is placed in the ignition and turned forward, the key cyclinder energizes. Then RFID of the key is read by the reciever in the key cyclinder and relayed to the PATS module. If the code is correct, the engine will start, if not... it will just light up the gaugues and not crank over. I don't know fore sure where the PATS module is... I know the keyless module is located in the passenger kick behind the factory stereo amp, or it may be built into the PCM, I don't know for sure without pulling up my Mitchell software. In my opinion, I don't think changing your key cylinder will change your PATS code.... if that makes sense the way I wrote it.... I don't think that if you change the key cyldiner and get a new key, that it will fix your problem.... You'll have different tumblers... but your key cylinder has one plug on it. I know those wires to be ground, ignition, TX, and RX. I would think you would be able to switch the PATS module and key cylinder so the tumblers woudl be right and not have any problems with it. Then again, I'm not expert and I don't know for sure. I'd try asking Bill at Team Ford or going to an SVT dealership and asking a service tech there.

We answered this once and for all today.

I got a full PATS system overnighted from Japa.... er... the east coast. Full meaning key, cylinder, transciever, and module. You're right, I didn't necessarily need a new cylinder, but this key already matched the module's code. Put the whole thing in; the car fired on the very first turn. NO problems starting since.

And the PATS module is located just above your glove box, but bolted to the front part of the dash. So, you have to look up and back, as it were.

AND I discovered the dip****s at Vista Ford were trying to diagnose the freakin' KEYLESS ENTRY module the whole time.....!! But that's another story...

I paid, just to get the car back, but I'm gonna go over there Monday and raise hell. They cut 8 freakin' keys! 8!! You'd think at some point it occur to them that that wasn't it....

Wow... if they couldn't figure out that they have coded keys... they need to find a new job.... thats just retarded..... was it even an SVT certified place that was working on it?

I think they are... and they know that it's coded... they cut eight TRANSPONDER keys. Hopefully that puts a dent in their profit margins...

They told me my PATS module was full and wouldn't accept new keys.... I was like yeah, ya think?
