98 Contour SE- Code P1747

I've got a '98 Contour Sport (Duratec 2.5L V6 24 Valve DOHC) that I bought earlier this year with very low miles (just under 65k miles). Recently I had the OD light flashing (which stopped), but now the car won't go out of 1st gear. A scan showed the P1747 code that I see is not uncommon. One shop I had the car in couldn't find any problem in the transmission and another shop wouldn't even touch the car due to its age. Before I get this car into a shop again, I'm wondering if any of you have had this type of problem and successfully had it repaired, and if so, what work was done to fix it?
