I have a 5 speed 2.0. I noticed some detonation sound when my car is running warm. I am asking if there is a way to set timing or check it from the outside of the motor. Never over heats or makes that detonation noise when first driving the car for 10 minutes or so. Thanks for any input

never done it on my tour, but my 92 mercury, i'd just take the timing belt cover off, turn the engine to TDC via the crank, and there were alignment marks on the sprockets and the head/block. someone tune in if this isn't the case with tour's, though.

You can take off your timing belt cover no problem. There two small bolts holding it in place. All you gotta do is finagle it from underneath the power steering fluid line...However, I don't know if this will help you with finding your possible timing issues though. Might as well just take the valve cover off and take a peak, this is also very easy to do. IIRC there are ten bolts holding it in place, maybe eleven or twelve.

Guys I think he is talking about ignition timing

I don't think that there is a way to adjust ignition timing. It is fixed physically on the engine but timing advance is modified by the PCM according to load, temp, engine speed, etc...........

If you are getting detonation, check to see if your CEL is on, if so then scan and read the codes, that might get you somewhere. If not, well then have fun. Althougth this engine is fairly insensitive to octane, you might try a tank or so of high octane gas to see if it makes a difference. Or you might have a carbon build up that is pre igniting your fuel charge when it is warm.

Some magic elixiers exist to help you clean out the combustion chamber, and they are usually introduced through the intake either through the horn or a vacuum hose.

Good luck

detonation? on a zetec?

I dont know what you are hearing... but it might be noisey lifters, I know the silvertop zetec, when it hits higher mileage, will make a dieselesque kind of tappeting noise. But ive never heard of detonation, if your timing belt is original at 100K+ miles, replace it and its tensioners, QUICK.

Static engine timing would not contribute to preignition.

Aside from some ideas covered, consider:

Crossfiring plug wires.
Air getting into the EGR or insufficient EGR.
A bad knock sensor.
Piston slap or rod knock.
